Chelsea Feel Lampard's Options Are Limited
Chelsea believe their England midfielder Frank Lampard is running out of options after rejecting a club record offer of a £135,000-a-week new contract, and are prepared to "call his bluff," according to the Daily Mirror.
The newspaper reckons that the Chelsea hierarchy, from owner Roman Abramovich down, will not shift their position or improve the offer they made to Lampard before the FA Cup final.
The club had wanted secure both Lampard and captain John Terry on improved contracts by now, with the squad off to Los Angeles for a pre-season tour and training camp next week.
But as Lampard starts the penultimate year of his existing deal, Chelsea are said to feel the ball is now firmly in his court.
According to the Mirror, Abramovich is determined that the club will not be seen as a "soft touch." And although Barcelona continue to be linked with a move for him, they have brought in Yaya Toure from Monaco and confirmed that the midfield trio of Deco, Andres Iniesta and Xaviwill be staying at Camp Nou.
Goal.com's Abhishek Thakur has presented the case as to why Barca nevertheless need Lampard, although the Mirror points out that if the Catalan giants urge
him to buy out the final two years of his existing deal, he could face up
to six months on the sidelines under Fifa's "sporting sanctions" provisions.
Meanwhile Juventus, now coached by former-Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri, are interested in Lampard, though having just been promoted from Italy's Serie B, they can't offer even Uefa Cup involvement next season.
So, Lampard can let things drop and negotiate with Chelsea again in a year's time, when he will have just 12 months left, or let his contract run down and leave the club for nothing in 2009, even though he would be losing around £45,000 per week compared with what he has rejected already.
