Yes, every organizition, from FEMA to the National Guard, to President Bush made some mistakes after this disaster. However, mistakes are only common in such a horrible tragedy this country has never really seen before. It's easy for us to sit here and play Monday Morning Capello, however I don't care where this disaster would hit there would always be some mistakes in the relief process. To acknoweldge these facts is certainly alright, but to use this disaster as propoganda against Bush is just fvcking ridiculous. And I'm not even one of his supporters.

Major Dutch newspaper Het Parool had a good top story today: the American federal government turned down an offer from the Dutch government to help reconstruct New Orleans and protect it with newly designed Delta Works of high-standard technology.

Quote from the article: "We offered them active help, which means we would go down there and construct these systems for them. But we also offered passive help; which means we would share our knowledge on water-managing, which, as you all know, consists of immensely valuable documents and research material dating as far back as the year 1000", a spokesman for the state department explained, "Both offers were turned down by the Americans."

What's that about Andy? You heard anything about that?

TBH Andy, it's one thing to make misstakes, and completely another to leave people to themselves for 4 or 5 days.

No I did not, however if we did not take your help it would be a mistake. You guys are the experts we need in a situation like this. However, I'm not even sure New Orleans will try to be restored...still up in the air.

Migration? That's option #2 we use in our country. Entire cities have been relocated throughout history.

That has a tendency of working out fine; IF proper procedures are being followed. It can get out of hand through corruption, property prices etc.

Stop saying it's easy to play Monday Morning Capello. People are judged by their results. Is it easy to criticise the American government? Probably. But we should still do so.

TBH, I'm not sure it's worth restorin. Not because it isnt a beautiful and historically important city, because it is, but rather because, at least from what I've heard from a lot of people on CNN, people might not want to come back to start over and risk having this happen to them again.

Well, with the South being so packed as it already is I'm not sure this would be possible. I have no clue how long this clean up will take, however it's probably gonna be over a year and that means about 1,000,000 people being displaced for that lengthy amount of time.

Bush just ordered 7,000 more troops to New Orleans to help restore order and safety. Also, the first transportation services has finally arrived at the Convention Center, long overdue to take victims to Houston.

No we don't. I have mentioned it earlier in this thread in reply to Bes, and Andy has watered it down to you guys very nicely.

It has nothing to do with color/race.

There's definately something wrong with the response, but I don't think its as bad as you people say it is.

True the government was a bit incompitent in their response. They underestimated the damage, but i don't think that they could have got there within hours like you people clame (news crews were early ...etc.) Most of the news crews never left or arrived before the storm hit.

Andy, as for looting, true, there are many people looting to get water and food, however, there are also many others who are JUST SICK FU**S. I can't believe how low some of these people have gone. There are gangs who carry M16s and go around the city shooting people (of course, all the gun shops, which are common down south, have been wiped clean). They shoot at police, they shoot at the helicopters that carry food and supplies. They shoot hospitals. They wiped clean the mall that i've gone to since i was a kid and then they burned it down.

It's a war zone. Some officers even turned in their badges because as they try to save people, others are shooting at them.

For frikkin sake, a truck with medicine that was heading to a hospital was hijacked. The hospital had nothing for the patients...

....

It's amazing how this disaster brings out the extremes of human nature. While you have these sick pricks on one spectrum, you have the volunteers and rescue workers who've done great. Just amazing.

Micheal Moore said i dont think that Bush dont like Blacks , i mean if this thing happened to white people , i think he will leave them 5 days on the roofs of their homes also

Majed & Mo, glad to hear you guys and family are ok.
The images I've seen on TV have been disturbing to say the least. If there was any shred of evidence how much damage a category 4 hurricane it would have been easier to mobilise all resources and get as many people out as possible.

I just think that they underestimated its imact on New Orleans in particular. A Catagory 4 hurricane will blow cities away, but not as bad as what's on the news. The problem is the resulting flooding that's caused by New Orleans's landscape. Locally, everytime we run from a hurricane (once or twice a year), we always hear about the likely possibility of catastrophic flooding. Every year, we luck out and hurricane shift or get weaker. It's sad to say, and everyone there knows this, but it was bound to happen.

Knowing this, the state should have done better to prepare for this event. However, the fact that Louisiana is the 2nd or 3rd poorest state in the nation didn't help. They have their own problems like crime, bad public school systems, and until recently, wide spread curruption. I would imagine that it's tough to spend millions on preventing this when more apperant problems are on the table. This is were the government should have stepped in I think. I'm no expert, but you would think that a strategic area like the Gulf coast and New Orleans in particular, with its oil and trade importance would be better taken care of.
