It's been a great year for us Juventus fans and to celebrate the 30th Scudetto win I've decided to cash up on a brand new server. We've had the old server for a little more than a year so I thought it was time for a upgrade.

Although our current server is pretty quick still 95% of the time, we're still seing some slowdowns during matches. And now that we've seen an increase in visitors and the fact that we'll play in the CL next year, I doubt we'll be seing a decrease. :p

Donations:

If you'd like to help with a donation towards the new server, please do so here:

http://forum.juventuz.org/misc.php?do=donate

The new server is quite expensive to setup and I have to pay double fees for bandwidth/hosting this month. So any change you can spare is helpful! :)

By donating you're added to the list of Contributors (you get green balls ;)) and you get full access to all areas of the forum.

Previous server:

Intel Core i7-930 (4 cores @ 2.8 Ghz)
24 GB RAM
2 x 1500 GB harddrives in RAID (mirrored)
Debian 5 with Plesk 9 Unlimited Control Panel

New server:

Intel Core i7-3930k (6 cores @ 3.2 Ghz)
64 GB RAM
2 x 3000 GB harddrives in RAID (mirrored)
Debian 6 with Plesk 10 Unlimited Control Panel

Performance:

Sandy Bridge for the win! The new CPU is more than twice as fast as the old one according to PassMark:

Old:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7+930+@+2.80GHz
http://ark.intel.com/products/41447

New:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7-3930K+@+3.20GHz
http://ark.intel.com/products/63697

I've also decided to go with 64 GB of RAM as that's very helpful for sites that are heavy on SQL (database) and this way we can keep more cache in memory than before.

What else?

We make automatic backups of all content (files, database etc) weekly and the forum is automatically backed up every night.

The new server is already up and running, I'm currently setting it up. :p

Damn this isn't looking too good, one of the harddrives is ready to give up. Resyncing the RAID now, hopefully I was able to fix it.

Why don't you block it from guests and disable registrations just for a day or two?
Read my post above, harddrive problem is causing the slowdowns.

Guests are blocked for now, it's been that way for 6-7 hours since I discovered the slowdowns.

Ah yes looks good now, no more errors. It'll take a while to resync the harddrives though:

    server1:~# cat /proc/mdstat
    Personalities : [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10]
    md2 : active raid1 sda3[0] sdb3[1]
    1462766336 blocks [2/2] [UU]
    [==========>..........] check = 54.0% (790342016/1462766336) finish=346.9min speed=32304K/sec

    md1 : active raid1 sda2[0] sdb2[1]
    264960 blocks [2/2] [UU]

    md0 : active raid1 sdb1[1]
    2102464 blocks [2/1] [_U]

Gf made me coffee though :D
