D.C. United friendly vs. Juventus is set: July 28 at RFK Stadium

D.C. United and Juventus, Italian soccer’s most storied club, have finalized plans to play a July 28 friendly at RFK Stadium. A formal announcement is expected this week.

The Turin-based team clinched its 28th Serie A title two weeks ago and recorded the first undefeated season (23-0-15) in the country’s top division since AC Milan in 1992. The club scored 68 goals and conceded just 20. This weekend it will seek the Italian Cup title against Napoli.

Kickoff for the United match is scheduled for 6 p.m. to accommodate national TV coverage, which hasn’t been announced yet. Tickets, priced between $35 and $65 before service charges, will go on sale Monday. For season ticket holders, the match is “Special Game 1” in their package. All plan holders have access to a presale, starting immediately.

The sides reached a tentative deal weeks ago after plans to participate in a doubleheader at FedEx Field failed to take hold. Chelsea and AC Milan would’ve played in the other match in Landover. Instead, those two clubs will face one another in Miami.

The Juventus-United match falls on the same day as a friendly in Baltimore between English rivals Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur (1 p.m.).

Juventus is also planning to play Real Madrid in Las Vegas and Paris Saint-Germain in Montreal.

This campaign culminated a return to glory from a match-fixing scandal in 2006 that stripped Juventus of the 2005 and ’06 titles and relegated the club to Serie B, the second division.

The squad included three of the greatest players of this Italian generation: goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, midfielder Andrea Pirlo and forward Alessandro Del Piero, 37, who isn’t expected to return after 19 years in Turin.

Juventus forward Mirko Vucinic and United midfielder Branko Boskovic are teammates on Montenegro’s national team.

Just watched the commercial. My F-Ing god is that terrible. Let's hire the guy who does monster truck events for a euroPean soccer event. Retarted American advertising companies are not as smart as they think.

Actually, they are pretty damn smart. Not everyone is going to be good, however.

Red Devils set to play Juve in Kolkata

KOLKATA: M for Messi last year, M for Manchester United this year. Indian soccer's Maximum City will kick off another fairytale this August.

English giants Manchester United and Serie A champions Juventus are set to make their maiden appearance on Indian soil at the Salt Lake Stadium on August 1.

West Bengal sports minister Madan Mitra told TOI on Monday that talks with representatives of both clubs are in the final stages and August 1 has been set as the tentative date.

The organizer, a global event management company that declined to be named because of a confidentially clause, said both clubs had confirmed they were available to play in the city on August 1.

Mitra said the state government had given its consent and don't foresee any hurdles before the big night when the city can expect to see Wayne Rooney and his Red Devils take on the Old Lady of Turin that has Gianluigi Buffon as one of its star players.

Though Manchester United lost the Premiership this year to City, it remains the world's most popular club. Juventus, though, have been mired in fixing allegations, with Buffon himself being probed for illegal betting.

Mitra said experts from Manchester United had already inspected the Salt Lake pitch and found the facilities adequate to host an international match. Officials of the state sports department are in constant touch with both clubs over phone and email.

A letter from Man United's global sponsorship director Casper Stylsvig was received on May 25, sources said. Francisco Calvo of Juventus' communication department, too, has written to the sports department, the sources added.

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but Juve will be in Canada to play PSG 31st July, and have a match against Real Madrid 5th August in Vegas.

I don't think it's happening...
