Red Devils set to play Juve in Kolkata
KOLKATA: M for Messi last year, M for Manchester United this year. Indian soccer's Maximum City will kick off another fairytale this August.
English giants Manchester United and Serie A champions Juventus are set to make their maiden appearance on Indian soil at the Salt Lake Stadium on August 1.
West Bengal sports minister Madan Mitra told TOI on Monday that talks with representatives of both clubs are in the final stages and August 1 has been set as the tentative date.
The organizer, a global event management company that declined to be named because of a confidentially clause, said both clubs had confirmed they were available to play in the city on August 1.
Mitra said the state government had given its consent and don't foresee any hurdles before the big night when the city can expect to see Wayne Rooney and his Red Devils take on the Old Lady of Turin that has Gianluigi Buffon as one of its star players.
Though Manchester United lost the Premiership this year to City, it remains the world's most popular club. Juventus, though, have been mired in fixing allegations, with Buffon himself being probed for illegal betting.
Mitra said experts from Manchester United had already inspected the Salt Lake pitch and found the facilities adequate to host an international match. Officials of the state sports department are in constant touch with both clubs over phone and email.
A letter from Man United's global sponsorship director Casper Stylsvig was received on May 25, sources said. Francisco Calvo of Juventus' communication department, too, has written to the sports department, the sources added.
