Knowing now what he did for us he was worth double but back then there is no chance anyone would of been happy paying that iirc there were a lot of people unhappy at us even taking him for free.

The difference is that back then Pirlo was considered finished as a player by many, while Masche is still one of the best for most people.

On the other hand Pirlo's playing style is about the least physical dependent ever seen by mankind, whereas Mascherano is completely dependent on it.

It doesn't matter 'though. Either they release him for a fair price or we will walk away.

Mascherano is a midfield controller when the team isnt in possession. He'll lead and direct himself and players around him on when to cover, press, close down. His tactical vision is at least as good as Marchisio's, but he has the huge added value of knowing when to mark which player closer, and when to make what kind of tackle, while beeing extremely good in anticipating and executing tackles.

A good example was at the world cup when he picked up Robben going trough the defence. Best example of his tactical reading of the game, added with the perfect tackle.

His 'physical aspect' is that he'll always win the duel on the midfield. I havent seen a single game in which he played CDM and his team wasent totally domminating the midfield. He is excellent at coordinating the players around him to close down gaps.

Good example was 2014 WC final. Germany had worldclass all over the midfield(Kroos, Muller, Khedira, schweinsteiger, ozil), while Mascherano just had fucking mediocre Biglia next to him, holding the midfield behind 4 offensive players that dont defend for shit. Yet he still domminated the midfield, but was let down by the forwards.

The only physical aspect he's declining in, is pace. Big deal. He's faster then Khedira and has better positionning and vision.

As long as the sum to sign Masch won't effect our capability to sign Pjanic/Gomes I don't mind going as high as 30M. Quality ain't cheap and Masch will instantly improve our starting eleven.

Benatia, Alves, Masch, Pjanic, Berardi/Cavani/Batyushai/Dzeko/Ibra.

Is this possible financially in this mercato? The reason I see Benatia as big a need as Masch can obviously play CB, but I think he is happier in midfield and hasn't been happy being deployed there by Enrique. Don't want him to have the same issue at Juve.

Mascherano= 15-20m
Pajnic 35-38m
Berardi= 25m

it's totally doable. Leaving out the likes of Cavani and Ibra. Why would one even want Dzeko is a mistery to me. Recently he broke is knee so he is a goner.....

The biggest struggle would be Pjanic as they want all the money in one go.
But with Morata leaving and Real giving 30m cash we should be able to get him.
I do really hope we get Pjanic before Gomes. After we sign Pjanic they can try whatever they want but we need the Rome midfielder

Yes I realised I forgot Berardi here too so I update this

It might be that we pay less for Morata's replacement with Berardi in mind, take another chance on a younger €20-25m signing with a smaller salary.

It's also possible that we might sell the likes of Zaza or Hernanes, so who really knows. Looking at our potential squad for next season Hernanes is looking increasingly obsolete.

Pjanic/Gomes wages will be higher than that. Gomes already earn that much in Valencia and to get Pjanic you have to offer him at least 4,5-5m (rumors he is asking 5m/year)
Asamoah 18m is impossible for a player who in the past 2 years passed most of the time injured.

Anyway we don't have to make a +/- 0 transfer window man. So is still doable.
Plus you forgot that Bayern has to pay us 4m for the second year of loan for Coman. Unless they decide to buy Coman now and give us 25m

But in first glance if we compare it position by position as best as possible, this is how I see in terms of improvement or not.

Dani Alves >>>>>> Caceres (if dont get CB its better comparing him to Alves)
Mirante < Neto but barely so, so its not really important.
New attacker < Morata defenitely, I cant see us getting someone better even if they might be more clinical them him, Alvaro's qualities are unique.
Mascherano >>>>>>> huge upgrade on Asamoah/Sturaro, gigantic upgrade.
Pjanic/Gomes >>> Pereyra Big leap in quality hopefully whoever it is.
Berardi < Cuadrado, the colombian will be hard to replace him with the element he added, even if I like Berardi and they dont truly play or function in same way, in first glance Colombian looks better. But Berardi might suprise and be super effective with what we missed from Cuadrado being added by Alves and Pjanic/Gomes instead more.

In overall this would be an upgrade for the team tho minus the Morata part (it depends entirely on how good his replacement is), because Alves, Mascherano and Pjanic/Gomes would be big upgrades IMO.

But somehow I dont see how it will all function with us signing a new CF on top of having Berardi, and then having AM signing, will be peculiar to see what they planning.
