I think 2001 was the year that Calcio started to go steadily downwards. It was due to the incapability of many clubs like Parma, Lazio and Fiorentina to sustain good squads. It was due to bad management and the lack of strategies to make bigger profits. Since 2002 there were 3 big teams in Serie A (Juve and the milanese teams) and one good season from Roma in which they won the Calcio. Many are saying that Calciopoli destroyed Serie A, but I think that Italy failed with the competition of the Premier League and Primera Division, which were able to invest much more money and more importantly - they were able to use the money better than most Serie A teams.

Yeah, Serie A started going downhill in 2001. If I remember correctly it was the year that it became apparent that Parma, Fiorentina, Lazio and Roma were having financial difficulties and on the brink of bankruptcy. Inter and Milan were also not financially stable, while not selling off their best players they hung on to them and failed to replace them. Hence Milan's best players only a few years ago were ageing stars from around this era.
I don't think the Premier League became stronger until a few years later though, after Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea. Up until then it was only Man Utd and Arsenal.

And damn, I don't remember Birindelli being that good, could teach Lichtsteiner a few things. The individual quality upfront was definitely better back then (Zidane, Del Piero, Inzaghi), but I actually like our modern play better.

English clubs did really well when they played against italian clubs even in season 2001-2002. Even Leeds was able to beat Lazio in CL when they were reigning champions. I think EPL did really well to create a good brand and Serie A failed miserably, and when I thought it couldn't get worse - Calciopoli came...

It was within the 2001-02 period that things went downhill. Gecchi Gori, Tanzi and Cragnotti all went to the wall and Roma then went the same way a year later. All you had left was the big 3.

The bottom half of the table teams suck this hard in Spain and Germany too. It's only in England that relegation area teams are half decent.

The big difference between Spain and Germany as opposed to Italy, is the top half of the table. Line up team for team, and 1-10 would be beat their Italian counterparts. In the Premier League it would be 1-20 as that league may not have the top that Spain and Germany do, but it has the best depth.
