I'd prefer teams like Lazio and Roma becoming consistent challengers. Roma for example are annoying but I don't hate them nearly as much as Milan. Lazio on the other hand, I would be glad to see them succeed

Neither Roma or Lazio can take place of Milanese clubs. Milanese sides share around 35% of football fans between them, while Roman clubs don't even hit the double digits. Another aspect are finances. Quite ridiculous to think they could ever become consistent contenders instead of Milan or Inter. Serie A to regain its appeal and fraction of its former glory desperately needs Milan and Inter to pull themselves together.

It's very simple, Roma has 6% of fans in Italy, Lazio 3%, which makes that even clubs like Napoli have more fans than both Roman clubs combined and that is pathetic. Around 10% according to yearly research conducted by Demos & Pi, but the later due to relatively unfriendly environment will have difficulties to gain more appeal abroad and that will halt their expansion. Highly improbable that Roman clubs could catching up with either Milan or Inter that have 17% and 18% fans among calcio followers in Italy. It's even worse when you look abroad as Milan is currently the most popular Italian club. Roma and Lazio on wider scale are insignificant. Another thing are funds and even without CL income both Milanese clubs are wealthier by quite some margin, especially Milan that earns around 250m, double of what Roma nets.
