:agree: the whole country is fucked from top to bottom. Beautiful country filled with fucking morons. Now I know why my relatives immigrated from that shithole as soon as they could.
Yeah, I mean to date so far, Italy has been my favorite place to vacation, it's beautiful & I had some of the best times of my life there. And I'm probably one of the biggest examples of a non-Italian Italophile, but I wouldn't be able to stand living there.

Italy has around 60 million people today. My country has the biggest Italian community outside of Italy, around 31 million people are of Italian descent. That's more than half the Italian population.

Just so you have an idea of how many Italians fled their country for whatever reason. Whoever had the chance to leave, left.
:agree: and with good reasons. Plenty of Italian immigrants here in Australia, easily the largest (non Anglo) European community in this country.

Anyway, even in the richer, less corrupt north where I have some relatives living, the conditions and living standards seem horrible.

Same, I think it's one of the most beautiful place on earth, unbelievable history, culture, language, food etc, but I could never in a million years live there.

The unequivocal reason was poverty. People can't eat, they leave. Same as the Irish.

I'm struggling to see the link here between the oppressive bureaucracy of the current nation and how it is affecting calcio, compared to post-feudal unified Italy. I don't think the country being 'fucked' quite covers it.

You must have extremely high standards then. Yeah, Italy is corrupt and the economy is currently woeful but you're talking about Italy almost as if you were describing a sub-Saharan African country.

Like JuveJay said, most left Italy because they were starving, as my family did.

Like you can't go to any country in the world (and yes, I'm including 'Murica here) and find awful living conditions.
This is true.

Yeah, my issues are mostly about their politics. The actual quality of life in the majority of the country doesn't seem that bad, especially when compared to some alternatives. But then again, I've never lived there so I can't say for sure. One of my best friends does actually want to move back in the next few years though.

The economy is pretty shot, so even most people in the north of Italy are struggling a lot right now (regular people, I'm not speaking of the small percentage of people who are really wealthy). I'm sure that's what @Bianconero_Aus meant.

Just had a friend of mine move his family to Norway cause he couldn't take living and working in Genoa anymore.

If that's the case it's just the same in America right now. Your regular john is struggling just as much, and now comes that Obamacare...pfft...

There's this old guy from Calabria from work and he goes visit every 6 months, he used to tell me how people can't find jobs and won't work for months, even years, and they just get by with the little they have.

In Brazil we have a saying that Italy is the Brazil of Europe not only for the number of immigrants but for being a cultural shambles just as we are.

It's the same in most Western countries. Scandinavian countries, Canada and Australia are exceptions, not the norm.
