Malago: Italian season below par
By Football Italia staff

CONI President Giovanni Malago has labelled this Serie A season as 'below par’ beyond Juventus and Roma, saying that something must be changed.

The Italian National Olympic Committee’s head has made clear his dissatisfaction with the strength of the competition in the Italian top flight this term.

“What is coming to an end has not been a great championship, even if Juventus have been monstrous and Roma fantastic,” Malago has commented today on Radio Anch’io Lo Sport.

“For too many months the positions in the League have been locked in a season which has been below par, as has also been shown by the Italian clubs’ path in the European Cups.

“This year clubs do not need 40 points to avoid relegation, they can achieve survival with a lot less.

“There have been so many games that haven’t been pretty, topped with a spectacle in front of quiet stadiums.

“Certainly compliments should be made to Juve and I wish them luck to win the Europa League. Roma have been great, but with those numbers they had to win a championship. We must do something.”

Malago, whose organisation are responsible for the development and management of sport in Italy, was asked what must change.

“Football pays the treasury more than €1bn a year and CONI receives around €10m for its task, we must not forget.

“But you have to wonder why a few years ago the League was the best in the world and now we have slipped back.

“We do not have the money of the sheikhs who have bought big clubs abroad, so we need to find alternatives, with an intelligent policy.

“If I think back to years ago, when our football was at the top, instead of squandering nefarious amounts on signings, Presidents could have invested a few million in stadiums. It was a scandalous choice.”

Remember when i said a few days ago, that we should applaud roma keeping racking points, because it would only make it more sour for them to still not be able to win a scudetto with it ?

Wel, this FIGC idiot is doing exactly that. Allready the complaining begins of "poor roma" who didnt win a scudetto with such points.

I fucking love it. Feed us more tears please. Moooore tears.

Nah, "we must do something" isn't about doing a new calciopoli. The man is simply saying that only in a weak league or in a league with two super strong teams the runner-up can win +90 pts. Since neither of Juve and Roma is a fantastic team that can challenge in CL without a problem, the obvious answer is that the league is weak.
We have a 17-0-0 record against the bottom 10. Roma have 15-3-0 against those same teams. Together, Juve and Roma have a 32-3-0 record against the worst 10 teams in serie A, or in other words, they won 99 of the possible 105 pts. It's like Real and Barca in La Liga, except that Juve and Roma aren't as strong as those two were in the previous seasons. In England you see the worst teams beating the best teams away from home, but this year in Italy when Juve and Roma face Livorno, Bologna, Udinese, Sampdoria, Atalanta, Genoa, Catania and the likes, it's always a 3 pointer for us and Roma.

When the man said "we must do something" he meant that they must try to improve the quality of the lesser teams in the league.

If Rossi and Gomez stayed healthy I feel this season would've been a lot more interesting.

He is right the league is a shambles right now and something must be done. If we lost to Benfica Portugal will climb above us in the European places. I think teams like Lazio and Udinese are to blame for this. They are happy to finish 5th-6th in the league then to just throw Europe away and finish in exactly the same position next year. What is the point in trying so hard to get into Europe only to not try in it at all? It's not like they will ever be competing for CL places on a regular basis.

I would believe you if this wasn't Italy or that he's a declared roma fan. :p

In years past I wouldn't agree that Serie A is weak. Now, there is no denying it. I'm not sure if it's just the talent but also the mentality of Italian football.

There is a stark difference in the game speed in Italy and Europe. There is a stark difference in the way European teams play us and the way Italian teams play us. Even teams like Trabzonspor will refuse to give us an ounce of respect. They will at least go down fighting.

A few weeks ago I watched Torino come play us in what's supposed to be a big derby and absolutely lay down for us. The small teams here are too scared to attack or they're not favouring the inclusion of pacey players not just in their lineup but in their whole organizational philosophy.

This is a league where Luca Toni has no problem keeping up with the pace of play and can actually be quite useful. Let's face it, he would get drowned out in Spain.

Now that us and Roma have stepped closer into modern football, you can see a huge gap created. Roma right now is not a traditional Italian team in any sense. They barely have a striker in place. At some points in the match you can find all their midfielders in the opponent's box. Even De Rossi.

The rest of Italy is unquestionably still spinning their wheels in another time period of football IMO.
