ItalJuve should be the biggest enough clue.
In terms of what ? Popularity ?

Sorry to say this but somehow Italian players dont quite seem to be in the same category as the flair South American teams' players or even the Germans for that matter in terms of a popularity quotient.

That's what I mean, look at all the high profile foreign players Milan sign. Even obscure ones, they must have gone through half the nations of the world. People follow players from their country, you only have to look around forums to see it.

This works against us with our policy, we are very much Italy's team, and have been since the early days. We are relying on things like our prestige, style of play, success, maybe even the Italophile aspect.

Barca at the time had the world's best player in Ronaldinho.

Post Ronaldinho ,they added a famous star like Henry. And then the Messi era begins and becomes the face of the team. One reason why Barca have so many fans nowadays i believe is Messi and Messi only.Forwards in football always have a huge fan following more than most.If Messi leaves,i can see the fans dropping down.

Not just CL ofcourse its a big factor in bringing new fans but having famous marketable players also helps you to boost your brand.PSG are heading in that direction.

Barca and Milan both these teams have/had genuine posterboys. Can you say the same about the Bayern team of last year as an example ?
From 2000 onwards effect of achieved international success, or possessing highly marketable player is multiplied. Globalization, importance of the brand, media, social networks, etc... We are one click apart from every product out there, news, or service. You can't isolate the specific factor in these circumstances, it's rather combination of many and we've been paying the price of spending too many years on the outskirts of Europe. But things seem to be taking a new turn for us and looking at the Facebook numbers for instance, we gain 100k new fans with each passing week, while only 1 year ago it was pitiful 30k.

I never suggested a change in policy though if thats what you're implying.Hence why a team like Juventus(who are known for their team ethic rather than brilliant individuals) performing in Europe is even more necessary to regain its elite status and outdo all other Italian teams from a popularity perspective and also from a monetary aspect too.

But the profile of the players apart from one or two veterans remain low since most of them ply their trade in Serie A.
Of the current Italy team, Pirlo is really the only one I'd call a widely known international star with his own fanbase (for the right reasons, so Balotelli doesn't count). And even so a lot of people acted like they didn't even know who he was until the panenka against England.

End of the day they are in a much worse position than us, they won't win the CL this year, nor the scudetto, and won't get into next year's CL. So a probably trophy-less season for the 'prestige' of getting to the KO stages of the CL.

If we win the scudetto I can't really see myself being jealous.
