It is. They used to have money before unification, then it went north. Hence why the large majority of Italian emigrates (my family as well) come from the south.

The North-South divide is reminiscent of Egypt during the time of the Pharaohs before unification. There was an upper kingdom, and a lower kingdom, one having a white crown and the other being red.
