Overall Nesta was better than Cannavaro, but there was a time in Cannavaro's career where was better than Nesta ever was.

World cup 2006.
Pretty close, but their styles were different as well...both we so damn elegant in their own right and what they did on the pitch, no one else did better anywhere else.

I would say Nesta's reading the game & elegance were sublime.

I would then say Cannavaro's man-marking & reactions/agility were out of this world.

What position are people judging Maldini in?

By most accounts, he was a better LB than he was CB.

I can't comment on his prime, but I wouldn't put him on the level of all time great for his ability at CB.

Nesta is the best CB I've seen.

Baresi & Scirea best Italian CB's, and possibly best CB's of all time along with Der Kaiser, although during that period they were playing as sweepers as opposed to the modern interpretation/definition of a CB.

Maldini is definitely amongst the greatest LB's of all time, if not the best.

Fabio winning the Ballon d'Or as a defender says a lot. :)

What about Thiago Silva?

I keep getting told by people how amazing he is.

 He is a good defender, but definitely not in the same class as those I mentioned. There is an evident lack of quality CB's these days, so Thiago Silva actually looks better than he really is.
:agree:

There are disturbingly few good defenders just now.

I think a lot of the shortage of top CBs is down to defensive players who are technically good being made into DMs when twenty years ago they would have been CBs.

Means you get very few of the sweeper-type CBs and more of the aggressive Vidic type CBs.

Allegri: "I don't know what Marotta's comments about the refs will create but us at milan we have another style."

The stile of having official statements on their sites stating the rules the ref should apply?
Stile of postponing matches a week in advance?
Stile of not complaining when you get a pk every week?
Stile of abandoning a match vs Marseille for a burned light in the stadium?
