And if Pirlo is one of the midfielders, then you get another guy who doesn't help defensively.

The Dutch were playing something similar, but Kuyt was doing more work than Dinho does and Pirlo's job in Milan was done by van Bommel/ de Yong in Holland.

Or one could use Spain as a comparison, but you can't compare the workrate of Xabi with Pirlo, and the Spaniards play defense with strong possession football, which Milan can't do. Also, Spanish defense is younger and better than Milan's defense. As is the goalkeeper.

It would still be interesting to see how will this work in serie A. That's a huge potential in attack and even if this team might be destroyed by Inter, overall they might collect enough points against the smaller teams to win the scudetto.
I don't think anyone is similar to them. In Holland, almost everyone tracks back and helps in defense with the exception of Robben and RVP probably. Spain like you said plays possession football, plus they have both Alonso and Busquets who stay back at all times, then they have Xavi whose a CM not an attacking midfielder, plus their high defensive line helps make the pitch smaller and spaces tighter, so thats different.

I think if they played with that formation and they had Pirlo as one of the two mids, it would definitely fail. But it will be interesting to watch nonetheless

4-3-3 then?

It would be interesting if they kept all their good players like Ronaldinho etc.
I think that formation best suits Ronaldinho, for that reason i think it would be good for Milan, but it would imply playing Pato on the wing which Berlusconi supposedly doesn't agree with. Maybe a 4-3-1-2??

Ronaldinho is staying. Berlusconi said so, agent said so and i believe the player said it too.
He's going to have to take a huge paycut though.

Milan will sell Huntelaar and get Dzeko. If Gattuso leaves, they might buy Honda as well. The players being talked about are Lazzari (Italian and Allegri's fav), Honda (marketable), and van der Vaart (not wanted by Mr. Mourinho).

Pato on the wing is useless, but Ronaldinho in the center is useless as well. Would be interesting to see which formation will Allegri opt to use.

I think they'll play a slightly unbalanced system.

It'll be similar to last season, but Pato just playing tucked inside a little, but Ronaldinho still playing wide.

I don't see any other way for them to play, given the players they have, what Berlusconi has said about playing two strikers and Ronaldinho not being good enough in the middle to play an orthodox 4-3-1-2.

I think they will start with Ronnie as a trequartista and it will fail so they will revert back to last season's style with Pato on the wing.

The formation you are proposing could work if they buy a box to box midfielder or use Flamini or Abate from the right to make offensive runs to balance it out a little bit.
