Mutu's Juventus memories

Adrian Mutu has thanked Juventus for turning his career around, but admits he would only go into Serie B for Fiorentina boss Cesare Prandelli.

Chelsea had sacked the Romanian for failing a drugs test when Juve snapped him up in January 2005 and, after his ban expired, began to rediscover his talent and form.

“I have to thank the club and the directors – the old ones, especially Luciano Moggi – as I owe them a great deal. They picked me up in a difficult moment of my career and helped me turn it around.”

Moggi and most of the administration were removed when Juve were demoted to Serie B in the Calciopoli scandal, but Mutu admits he was never going to stick with the club like Gianluigi Buffon, David Trezeguet, Pavel Nedved and Alessandro Del Piero.

“I only thought about following them to Serie B in a very superficial manner. The directors had gone, but I had the chance to remain in Serie A in a great city like Florence,” he told 'La Stampa’ newspaper.

“My real choice though was Prandelli, the same Coach I had at Parma. He is extraordinary. Now if he had been in charge of Juve, I would have accepted the demotion, but only for him.”

Mutu’s Bianconeri past made his transition to Fiorentina difficult to begin with, but he has now become a symbol of the side.

“The Fiorentina fans are very demanding, especially as I came from their historic rivals. I learned though that if you give everything on the field, even in Florence they change their minds.

“I have a contract that expires in 2011 and am very intrigued by what is being built here. I would love to take the club to the Scudetto and experience the World Cup with Romania. My last major tournament was the 2000 European Championships and that is not enough.

“As for my future, I can see myself as a Coach,” he concluded.

Sven swoops for Vieira?

While Manchester City prepare a £6.5m swoop for Patrick Vieira, Inter Coach Roberto Mancini slams Sepp Blatter’s proposal to limit foreign players.

Today’s 'News of the World’ claims that Sven Goran Eriksson is ready to end Vieira’s nightmare stint at San Siro and bring him back to England.

The former Arsenal midfielder has played just 68 minutes of competitive football for Inter this season – in the Italian Super Cup defeat to Roma in August – after suffering a series of injury setbacks and the club is losing patience.

Last season he managed only 28 games between Serie A, the Champions League and Coppa Italia and has not featured in the top flight since the 4-3 win over Lazio on May 13.

Meanwhile, Mancini reacted angrily to FIFA President Blatter’s proposal to limit the number of foreign players in a starting XI to five from 2010.

“We would have difficulty, I think, and I’m sorry but I do not agree,” said the tactician who has regularly fielded no Italians in his squad this season.

“It is difficult to find Italians who are up to the standard of playing at Inter, as those clubs who have them keep a tight hold on these stars. We have some talented youngsters and are trying to help them grow.”

UEFA President Michel Platini also took a stand against Blatter’s plans, although from a legal standpoint rather than a moral one.

"The philosophy is fantastic but legally it is difficult," Platini told Reuters.

"I can understand FIFA because they have 208 national associations and then there are 29 EU members who are all in our confederation. The philosophy is good, but for me it is not possible."

Spalletti sees reborn Roma

Luciano Spalletti has praised his Roma side for reacting so well to recent setbacks, but Mimmo Di Carlo is furious with the referee.

“We settled straight into the match and after the second goal relaxed into the lead,” said the Giallorossi boss after their 3-0 victory away to Parma.

“It is true we did not lock the result away immediately, but neither did we struggle. We maintained our balance and showed great character in reacting to the defeats with Inter and Manchester United. I am sure my men will be able to take the right things from this win without letting themselves get over-excited.”

The Tardini side did not see it quite the same way and were angry at the referee for dismissing Bernardo Corradi less than half an hour in.

“Certainly today the incidents that went against us were extraordinary,” commented Coach Di Carlo.

“You prepare for a game all week, then after two minutes you’re a goal behind with a debatable situation. Then we made a mistake in allowing a counter from our own corner kick.

“I am disappointed in Corradi’s red card, as his second bookable offence was very harsh. I don’t think it was intentional handball. It was always going to be tough after that.”

Wouldn't it be more like no italian stars want to play at Inter?

Everyone is talking about Mourinho as a possible replacement for Ancelotti, but has anyone considered Lippi?Or maybe even Capello for another term at the San Siro?I never thought Lippi and Milan could be one,but i think it could be possible now.Or maybe even Deschamps!
