Palermo have stolen a march on Inter Milan in the race for Atalanta striker Stephen Makinwa.

Inter were favourites to land the Nigeria international, but Atalanta have grown frustrated with the lack of communication coming from the Milan club in recent weeks.

Palermo have stepped in and while their new offer of £5.2 million falls short by £300,000 of Inter's proposal, their insistence of the deal being closed quickly has been welcomed by Atalanta's board.

Both Inter and Palermo have offered Makinwa terms of a three-year deal worth £1 million-a-season. But while initially favouring Inter, the Nigerian is now coming round to the idea of living in Sicily and is ready to accept a move to Palermo.

It is thought that the two clubs have now agreed a fee and that contracts will be signed early next week.

After reportedly seeing a bid of £19 million turned down my Parma last week, the two clubs have settled on a deal after Milan agreed to pay the Gialloblu’s share of a special clause.

The clause meant that if the player was sold for more than £14 million they would have to pay Gilardino a bonus payment of £1.4 million.

The Rossoneri are set to pay that and hand Parma £18.6 million, with Gilardino signing a five-year deal.

Torino and Messina axed? Saturday 9 July, 2005

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Torino and Messina are facing the risk of expulsion from Serie A because of the state of their finances.

Covisoc, the body who must ratify that all clubs have the funds necessary to be registered for the new season, have found problems with both outfits.

As it stands now, they are not part of the First Division but the pair have until July 12 to appeal against the initial decision.

A final verdict on whether the clubs can compete in the top-flight next term is expected on July 15.

Numerous other clubs in lower Divisions are facing similar problems, with Perugia and Salernitana risking demotion from Serie B. A total of 16 clubs are in trouble in Serie C.

Toni set for Tuscany transfer Saturday 9 July, 2005

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palermo striker Luca Toni is expected to be wearing the Fiorentina shirt by the end of next week.

Reports in Italy on Saturday suggest that a transfer is close after Palermo lowered their £11m asking price to £8.5m.

Although the Viola have still not met that demand, talks between Presidents Diego Delle Valle and Maurizio Zamparini, of Fiorentina and Palermo respectively, have opened the door for a switch.

It will now be up to Viola sporting director Pantaleo Corvino to successfully conclude negotiations.

"I will meet with Palermo to finalise everything but only if they accept our offer," he told the fiorentina.it website.

"We don’t intend to spend more than £7.5m for Toni. If they agree, we will then discuss a contract with the player which must also be reasonable."

The Stadio Franchi side have been looking for a new target man after also being linked with Bernardo Corradi of Valencia, Udinese forward Vincenzo Iaquinta and even Hernan Crespo of Chelsea.

Palermo, despite the fact that Toni has scored 50 goals in two seasons, are ready to sell after netting Andrea Caracciolo from Brescia.

They also seem to have their eyes on a new striker, Atalanta’s Stephen Makinwa, if the Italian international is released.

"We will meet Atalanta this week," said his agent Silvano Martina given that Palermo, Inter and Stuttgart have all made bids.

"Where does the player want to go? He will play his football where ever Atalanta decide he will."

Torino and Messina Facing Expulsion
7/9/2005 8:52:00 PM
As things stand, neither club are listed as part of Serie A.
Covisoc, the body who ratify that Serie A clubs have the funds necessary to be registered for the new season, have issues with the financial state of both clubs.

Torino and Messina have until July 12 to appeal against this initial decision.

Both clubs could yet secure bank loans to convince Covisoc to reconsider, or argue the case directly. A final verdict is expect on July 15.

This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the financial chaos still plaguing the Italian game. Both Perugia and Salernitana have similar problems and risk demotion from Serie B, while an incredible total of 16 clubs are in trouble in Serie C.

Fiorentina are reported to be closing in on the signing of Valencia winger Stefano Fiore.

Fiore is looking to return to Italy after an unhappy spell at La Mestalla.

The Italian international struggled to establish himself at the Spanish club after arriving from Lazio and both parties are now seeking a parting of the ways.

Fiorentina have opened talks with Valencia over a possible season-long loan switch with the option of a permanent deal.

Fiore is determined to leave Valencia and is thought to be prepared to take a pay cut to return to Serie A.

The Viola have also been linked with a move for Internazionale's Andy van der Meyde.

The Dutchman seems set to leave Inter after being told he does not figure in their long-term plans.

Van der Meyde seemed set for a switch to Monaco only for the move to fall through at the last minute and now Fiorentina could be ready to offer him a route out of Inter.

You know, all this Fiorentina activity on the transfer market -- out as well as in -- still makes me believe they've learned nothing from their near-relegation season.

Keep the pieces changing over and over again, and it doesn't matter who you bring in -- your squad is so f%#$ed up with no clue as to which way is up that they will underperform like Inter after bad Mexican take-out.

Fiorentina have tied up their move to bring Stefano Fiore back to Italy.

The talented midfielder has joined the Viola on a season-long loan from Valencia - with a view to a permanent arrangement.

Fiore had endured a miserable time in La Liga after joining Los Che from Lazio 12 months ago.

He struggled to tap into his best form and the departure of compatriot Claudio Ranieri as coach only compounded his difficulties.

The schemer has now been handed the chance to revive his career with Fiorentina after finalising his switch to the Artemio Franchi.

Fiore is delighted to end his spell at the Mestalla and is aiming to force his way back into the Italy squad.

"I hope to gain revenge for myself after a bitter season in Spain and to find my place again with the national team," said Fiore.

With Fiore's signing wrapped up, Fiorentina could now swoop for his fellow Valencia flop Bernardo Corradi.

As much as he's a threat to Juve, I've always liked Fiore and hopefully he gets his form back.I don't think he's done as badly as many say at Valencia, I remember a number of more than decent performances and of course classy goals.

Fiorentina have tied up their move to bring Stefano Fiore back to Italy.
And here Prandelli -- a coach I respect, btw -- is calling for "patience" from the fans:

http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/jul13e.html

How about some patience within the club? Fiorentina tries an experiment by making wholesale changes to the squad that got them to Serie A.

Result?: Miserable, underachieving season that goes through several coaches and top-dollar signings that finished with missing Serie B relegation by the luck of a mathematical formula.

So what has Fiorentina done? What have they proven they have learned? They sack their coach again. They let go a few of their top players last season for peanuts. Then they go after a slew of brand new players... making wholesale changes to the squad that barely survived Serie A last season.

This is beyond stupid. You know what they call doing the same thing twice and expecting a different result?
