Sure the government of saudi arabia doesn't care and wants to normalize relations with israel but what happens if israel kills 10s of thousands of palestinians over the next few days. Outrage in the islamic world could be so immense that the arab govts who want to normalize israel relations will face immense domestic public pressure to back out
At least that seems to me like the only logical explanation ive heard for why hamas would launch this attack
Agree. This puts on pause the normalization efforts and depending on how bloody the retaliation is, potentially rolls it back. There is so much to be gained on all sides if you form a soft alliance/cooperation between the Saudis, UAE, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar and Israel etc.. All but the Palestinians ofc.
Iran ofc fears being the only pariah excluded from this coalition and so has every incentive to destabilize it. From their perspective, they're seeing the gulf states grow in power, diversifying their economies away to become less oil dependent and liberalizing internally away from Islamism. As a fully oil-dependent Islamist state this is a horrifying prospect. They know they'll be squeezed out and they can see that their own population is increasingly rejecting their ideology.
Thats why if Israel are smart and dont act out of emotion they would practice restraint and be methodical in taking out Hamas and only Hamas. Doesn't look like this is happening. If they let emotion take over and prioritize a further land grab or revenge over normalization, then they've lost sight of the big picture.
