I have never really followed Iranian football, even though I should- there are some 15 million Azerbaijanis living there.

I know one thing- this guy Ali Daei has broken Ferenz Pushkash's record (1945 - 1956) of the number of goals scored for a national team. Between 1993 and 2003 he scored 87 goals in 118 games. Pushkash had 84 goals in 89 games.

For comparison, Ronaldo has 50 goals in 74 games (9 years), Batistuta has 56 goals in 78 games (11 years).

Certainly, playing some Asian countries is different than playing England, Italy and Spain, but still.

    Iranian football :fero:

France 98 World Cup Qualifying Play-offs

    First leg: Iran 1-1 Australia
    Second leg: Australia 2-2 Iran

    :wallbang:

Australia were leading comfortably 2-0 and looked set to become the 32nd qualifier, but we totally fell asleep and conceded 2 sloppy goals

Nah, it wasn't looking that great at all. A 1-0 home victory isn't that great a lead. Maybe I should be thankful that we didn't make it.. i'd probably have been embarassed by France, Senegal and Denmark

well there is talen in term sof technical ability in iran, if u see the players they have, such as karimi, they have bag and bags of skill, they jus lack the tactical discipline, and the only reason they go to germany is due to some kinda historic relationship ...apparantly.

yes an no, they like handball....and i think field hockey.
    handball and field hockey???

handball ain't that popular among us iranians, I like it though!
filed hockey? I think you have mixed us with Pakistan!

Football is the biggest sport in Iran. it's something everyone plays...
it's not like europe that everyone can play for a local team so everyone
plays on the street and parks... U develop great technique this way...
and if U r lucky U can go to try outs...

next to football is sports that have been popular since ancient times.
Weightlifting and Wrestling (not WWF crap lol)

    back to the topic.

Hashemian has this year shown great skills... he is loved and hated among us. loved b/c he is doing great job, hated b/c he refuses to play for the national team...

Mehdi Mahdavikia coming from a year where he
won the assist league and was voted MVP of the year for HSV.
however this year hasn't been that good...

There is a player who would stun you all... his name is Ali Karimi.
He has great technical skills and was for some years ago offered
a contract with Atletico Madrid. Back then they were playing in the
2nd division. he refued their offer hoping another 1st division team
    would buy him...

at the end he fell for the money and went to UAE league!!! :fero:
we are all hoping that he will show his magic infront of the world
    in WC 2006...

btw. did U all know iran is one of the powersides in futsal???
for 3 years in a row they have won the asian championship with
    a undefeated record....

they played the european champions italy for some months ago,
2 games played both ended in a draw...

they played against spain (World champions), iran drew in the
last seconds of the game and the spaniards totally losted where
they left the game as it was supposed to go 2 overtime or something... :groan:
