lol wat?! He's one of Milan's best players this season, the only one who performs to a certain degree, consistently. Last season as well. Without Montolivo Milan look far worse, quite noticeable whenever he's absent; last weekend for instance when he made way for Honda, Milan looked like a different team. Why are people questioning his qualities is beyond me.
@89man your thoughts on Montolivo as you've probably seen more Milan's games than me?
Sorry, should have been more clear, I meant for the national team. Bar a couple of matches, he's never impressed me much there. I'm not taking into account any of his performances for Milan.

The amount of quality players Spain has is unreal. They can form 2 teams that would fight for WC.

Casillas
Arbeloa-Ramos-Albiol-Monreal
Fabregas-Xabi-Busquets
Pedro-Diego Costa-Iniesta

Valdes
Juanfran-Pique-Iñigo Martínez-Alba
Thiago-Xavi-Martinez
Navas-Torres-Silva

leftovers: Reina, De Gea, Azpilicueta, Borja Valero, Koke, Michu, Callejon, Cazorla, Isco, Mata, Villa, Negredo, Llorente :rndh:

Difficult to compare teams over eras, but Brazil 1970 are always seen as the benchmark.

It's a bit like when Barcelona were claimed as the best club side ever, than Bayern spanked them. In a year or two they'll be saying the same about Bayern, and on it goes. Football is played at such a high technical and physical level now.

Still can't see how this could be true.
Besides, just because a player had a few good games a couple years ago doesn't mean that he automatically deserves a spot now. He's been underwhelming for a while now.
If it was just one or two games, I would agree with you, but he has poor or average games more often than great ones.
He had some good and bad games over the course of the years so calling for his omission by some I really can't understand. Anyway the club form is the main determinant of who gets the call and that's my point. Who should Prandelli call instead? Aquilani? Nocerino?

As for the NT he had more impact than Marchisio, but people over here disregard Marchisio's abysmal showing last year at Confederation Cup, when he would put in one after another horrific performance and place him into starting 11 by default and never question his status, even though he's spent most of the season as Pogba's sub. The fact is that Montolivo was rather dominant at Euro 2012, putting in great performances vs England and Germany in the process, but after the tournament along with most Italian players, be the cause of it poor fitness level, tactics, he has simply failed to repeat those. But still he is very valuable member.

the most dominant maybe, greatest football generation was in the 90's early 2000's imo
If you ask people that lived in the 80's, they will say that is the greatest generation of football, and so on, the same is said in any sport.

But i agree with you, the talent pool in the 90's was crazy.

does everyone agree that Spain 2008-to this day is the greatest NT ever?

PS if they win this year as well it'd be insane.
2008 team was a great team. 2010-2014 has not impressed me at all, they played dire football in 2010 and at the Euro's 2012. Last night's game really impressed me there passing was so sharp and they weren't knocking it about meaninglessly like they have done for the last 4 years. They were penetrating the defence very quick with some unbelievable touches.

Montolivo has been nothing but a disaster for the Italian team, I dont care how good he plays for Milan International level is a step up above Milan and he cant cut it.

Marchisio is in a similar situation as well he hasn't performed like he should i still have more confidence in him to have a good game though than i would Montoshitty.

Marchisio was a beast in the Euroes. He's that kind of player Prandelli likes - versatile, athletic and he got some Technique too.

Yep, Montolivo is just a shit version of Pirlo so why the hell would u have him in the team? Veratti and Pirlo is enough for that playmaking position. Marchisio is an all round midfielder and can play in a holding or an advanced role as well as having some decent passing and cover for the defence.

As far as the Euro goes I recall Marchisio having a decent tournament, but never quite dominating in any of the games, nor holding our midfield like Montolivo did against England and to some degree against Germans as well. Many times during the tournament Montolivo held reigns and when Pirlo obviously couldn't because of fatigue he would step in and impose himself. That was evident in semis. Marchisio missed abundance of chances and that I recall as well. Whether he'll be first choice for Prandelli depends on a few details, but Montolivo's place is almost guaranteed.

He's different than Pirlo, as unlike our maestro Montolivo can defend and quite decently performs that task. Of course he doesn't have his passing or vision, but if Prandelli opts to use 4-3-3, then Pirlo could finish on the bench and defensively more sound midfielder could be introduced as a way to eliminate Pirlo's defensive deficiencies and for providing an overall balance. Marchisio IMO can be good holding midfielder and that's about it, and his so called versatility is little bit exaggerated term, as he failed to adapt anywhere where he was placed, from AM, LW, B2B...

Yeah.

His value was rather insane but can't ignore the fact that many people laughed when it came to Bale, during his stay at Tottenham. Many members said how he's overrated just because of that match when he destroyed Inter (especially Maicon). But he's a beast without a doubt, great player.
and i have this feeling he will be an even bigger beast next season... if anyone can stop bayern this season then its Real with him and Ronaldo...
