I remember we played the first match of the season at home against Lecce if I'm not mistaken, and DP and Tacchinardi were taken off some mintues before the end and they were both whistled off the pitch. Then in injury time Conte (I think) scored the winner...now that was a captain! Giving his heart out and showing all that fighting spirit and character...something which DP sadly lacks and that is why he will never be back to his best.

Well, first off Martin, I have to congratulate you because you are the first one to recognise Del Piero was excellent, whereas most people (Andy & Co) claim he has been off-form since 1998 (!) and that he failed to shine again for seven years, which is totally false, as everyone knows he was a key figure in our latest trophies and exploits.

By the past, Del Piero took advantage of Lippi's support, which is quite normal as Lippi is the coach who revealed him and helped him reach his peak. Now he is struggling against Capello's doubts and biased decisions. as surprising as this may sound from a DP thoroughgoing supporter, doubting Del Piero is legitimate even if Del Piero has performed rather well this season. Much as I may despise Capello right now, he is the coach and is right as long as Juventus wins. His job is to get the 3 points.
Now the original question of this thread, and generally the recurrent argument in this forum, is whether Del Piero is declining. It can't be answered
now. If Del Piero is still the player I loved and still love, he will give his all to rule the game again, no matter what. Now it really is up to him, and if he makes his way out of this rough patch, I hope the fools and haters who bashed so often and said his career was definitely over will have the decency to shut up for good over the Del Piero issue.

Can you honestly say that Del Piero in the years 2001-2003 (since you've said it was his best years) that he was better then any other player Juve could of brought, was he one of the best in the world, and the kind of player who would of made Juve 1/2 the team (attacking-wise) that they were if he was to get injured? Who said 2001-2003 was DP best period? I have only said that he had a good seasons between 2001-2003 but it was not his best years for sure..

In case you haven't watched many Juve games, Del Piero scored 50 goals in these two seasons and provided Trezeguet with dozens of assists. If it wasn't for his injury in the middle of 2002-2003 season, he would have won the golden ball, as everyone was pointing out in Italy. Of course, Nedved was decisive too, as his technical and physical abilities led the team to excellent results despite Del Piero's absence. But when you WATCH the videos of those two seasons, ain't no going wrong with it, it is damn impressive, just remember the legendary gift to L'Avoccato Gianni Agnelli (aerian backheel), the late equalizer against Parma, the backheel ag. our archrivals Torino, The TWO SCUDETTO-GOALS (The sooner against Udinese and above all the latter, a marvelous shot ag. Del Piero's performances in 2001-2002 were just as good as those of Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2004 while he was excellent in 2002-2003. He scored over 40 goals in that period and was an integral part of Scudetti numbers 26 and 27. Did you forget the three goals he scored against Roma (in two meetings) in 02-03? He actually did well against big teams that season, putting in stellar performances against Roma, Inter, Milan and Real. His strike rate in Serie A spoke for itself, 16 goals in 24 games. He suffered two long injury lay-offs that same year, but still came fourth in the goalscoring table. Hearing people say that DP hasn't done anything for Juve since 98 ticks me off.

I didnt, so you know and I have never not said it was true, I am not a fan of Juve, and I dont watch many Juve games, all I can do is have an opinion of Del Piero in the games I have seen him in, most recently was a few times this season, and in the Euro2004, which he was extremely ineffective, and I believe had Cassano of played instead of DP we wouldnt of gotten knocked out, for example, we'd of beat Sweden. But, like someone said it is the past, and for a team like Juve they need players on top of there game, I dont believe Del Piero can return to that form he showed pre-98 (I say pre-98, because that was the last time I saw DP actually play very well consistently).

2001 till 2003 was great, some deny that, because of the hate they got for the Captain...but no one can deny that he has scored over 45 goals helping Juve to clinch the scudetto 26 and 27....2004 was a bad year for him due to the several injuries he had ( Deportivo in CL was one of them ).....

Actually third ( if am not mistaken )...

Anyhow he suffered lot of injuries but still he helped the team to win the league and finishing 2nd in CL....

Juve renew Del Piero faith Tuesday 25 January, 2005

Juventus have told admirers of Alessandro Del Piero to forget about any hopes they have of signing him.

"He is a champion and I’m sure that he will remain here with us," director general Luciano Moggi told the "Processo di Biscardi" TV show.

"At this moment in time there are other players who are in better form but he is a first team regular and he will soon be doing the things he can."

Del Piero’s future has been cast in doubt given his difficult relationship with boss Fabio Capello.

The tactician doesn’t seem convinced by the player and after continually substituting him, the captain has been dropped from the side for the last two League games.

That has led to speculation of a summer move, with his agent insisting that Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United are all keen.

"Evidently clubs are contacting his agent to see whether a move is possible," added Moggi.

"But that is only because they know that we won’t sell him. Del Piero will definitely remain here."

Juventus managing director Antonio Giraudo also backed the No 10, who is contracted to the Delle Alpi outfit until 2008, but warned him to improve.

"Del Piero is a champion but when you are at a club like Juventus you can’t live on the past," he stated.

"Capello currently has other ideas but let us not forget that the likes of Andriy Shevchenko and Christian Vieri both spent time on the bench a few years ago."

Dear Nicole, Cassano played almost the whole sweden match in case u were elsewhere then...and Del Piero was quite good in that match combining well with the same Cassano. Italy drew against sweden because of Trap's tactics..U don't seem to follow soccer very often and formulate some strange prejudices just like most of DP haters who hate him just because he's the crowd's favourite..But I'm cool with it

Get your facts straight, I never said anything of the sort. I have always maintained that DP has been off form since 2003, and that the form he lost was not even near the pre-1998 form.
