Zidane is an exception to the rule, but he was schooled in tactics at the Lippi university. Usually top players don't make top coaches imho - because they would expect almost impossible things, especially in clubs with natural pressure. I can only imagine ADP, R9 or the likes showing a group of players (some even at Juve) how to do a certain move, take 3 players and score - just to be disappointed why no one is 'getting it'. 
PP: On a sidenote, even Zidane seems to be performing better with top players, than average ones. I guess even with the whole world on their shoulders it makes for an easier communication of ideas and the ability to execute them on field.
One of the reasons I would like to have him here WHEN we have a top team, at least technically.

My mistake - I meant top players technically. That is why defenders are better managers in general too imho. Maybe attacking is more personal approach as it requires invention and reaction at the same time.
But yeah - midfielders must be part-time coaches to do their job properly and link up a team. Naturally they progress to be a full-time coaches. Ball playing defenders are in the same park - Koeman, Guardiola... maybe BonBon someday.

Besides being leaders on the pitch, top coaches tend to be midfielders (most commonly CDMs) because mids tend to be most tactically savvy followed by CBs.
It's ridiculous to think only defenders or defensive midfielders can be good coaches.
That being said, I'd really prefer him not to coach. But that's just because growing up I was a huge fan of his. Imagine he coaches Juventus and makes horrible decisions. I couldn't stand it.
