I'm pretty sure that's how it was. After Vialli left Conte became Captain, starting 1996-97, but then in for 1999-2000 DP was decided to become captain since Conte wasn't really a starter but Ale got injured badly so it was given back to Conte, then back again to Del Piero by Lippi in 2001-2002.

I don't know about retiring the jersey, I am not really with it. I think Del Piero would be the last one to want such a thing. A nice celebration for his achievements and commitment and , of course, a very careful approach when selecting the next number 10.
I would go with either a very, very promising kid. Neymar with different attitude and preferably home grown or a player that has shown consistently (at least 2 seasons) that he deserves it.
