If you're not DP you ain't worth it, I'm surprised you didn't knew it already.

It's not about who the better player is and Raz is actually right for the first time in his life. Neither Baggio nor Zizou deserve that either, both have achieved more personal awards than Alex has. None of the mentioned players, despite their legendary status, could come close to being an icon for the club who has always been full of great stars, before and after Platini. 20 years of playing for the team and achieving everything with the team, becoming the symbol of the club and the player people around the world would instantly think of the moment they hear the club's name, Alex has become our brand, our most celebrated player and undoubtedly, our most loved player by the fans even though there have been better players than him at different eras.

Then why not Scirea's 6, the guy died and it wasn't even retired.

When you take away a shirt like that you take away a legend in itself, you rob future champions of their chance to wear it. I can picture it now, all those kids in Italy who one day dream of wearing the Juventus number 47 shirt.

He is going to have to be honoured in a very large way in some capacity, perhaps naming a stand after him as some have suggested on here. Retiring the jersey would be a suitable dedication to the man but if it's not in the club's nature to do so then that's fine. I'll say it again, I just don't want to see the number ten passed onto someone who just arrives in the door (even if that someone is Jovetic, Suarez etc), they should have to earn it.

To me it's not about what they did to the club ether. The fact is that club has a tradition not to retire but to pass on the numbers, and he has become such a figure because of the other legends that made this club what it is today.

I don't deny his legend status versus Zidan, who was one of the best ever, or whoever else but retiring his number as an awful idea.

I can't disagree with you because everything you said is spot on. You know how I stand with jersey numbers. I don't remember them and I don't really give a damn. I can say with 100% certainty that Del Piero is 10, Buffon is 1 and Vucinic is 14. I swear I won't know or won't be sure about what number do the other Juve players have. I just don't pay attention to that because I don't find it important.

Still, it's the number 10. It's just a number actually but legendary players made the number legendary and most desirable. We know what the #10 Brazil jersey means to Brazilians. Everyone wants to have it. It was Pele who made it legendary, wasn't it? Now everyone wants to have it and sometimes well worthy sometimes less worthy or sometimes not worthy at all players get to wear it, but it still means the world to Brazilians and it will be a revolution if it's retired. Same in Argentina. Maradona made it big and until Messi came maybe many Argies thought it must be retired. But it would have been a mistake if they did it because it was a really wanted jersey and players need to work and be great to earn it.
The Juve #10 was worn by legends but it's Del Piero who made it really heavy and legendary. I won't mind too much if it's retired, but I like the idea of it being available and kids desiring to grow up and wear it one day. Because whoever can handle the weight of that #10 Juve jersey, he'll be a star well worthy of it. Sometimes bad and really unworthy players might get it, but a day will come, and I hope soon, when a player will deserve it, wear it with pride and spit blood for it like he won't do for any other jersey not worn by Del Piero. I want that to happen and even though I'm normally indifferent about these things, I want the jersey to remain available.

You have to remember that some here care for Del Piero above Juventus, so club traditions come secondary.

It could even be something as subtle but respectful as putting the initials of such a player in the number itself. I don't want to see future players not given the chance to wear certain numbers, it's an American gimmick in sports where it's normal to have numbers like 88 and 90. Juventus do not do that, our players do not wear basketball numbers, it's 1-30 and then the kids, that's our tradition. Buffon used to wear 77 and 88 at Parma, when he came to Juventus he was told he would wear number 1.

This. And it should always be so. :agree:

Speaking of Zizou btw, finally his number found a worthy bearer eh ;)

Retiring numbers is kinda stupid. But I do want it not to be worn by anyone for at least a few years. No one currently at the club really 'deserves' to wear the legendary shirt. When we do get an exceptional individual to wear it, then why not?

Edit: vajayjay, do you consider Matri a kid? :D I believe players from the primavera are given numbers from 40 when they join the first team.

Yep, it's not only the number, but traditions too.
