I'm not judging by that theory alone. Ciro even thought of benching him while Del Piero didn't allow that. He was placing an extra pressure on him to play him and hey, benching Alex isn't easy 
Under Ranieri he did good but nobody was mentioning what happened two years ago, but now. I'm not underrating anything, he saved our team many times and he will still save this season, but that doesn't have to anything with my point again. It's obvious he's getting weaker every season and there's simply no 36yo striker that can play for 70' and where team benefits from that. You will probably defend him even when he's 40 though. There's nothing wrong in it but let's face it, he's fading man. If we had Mourinho he wouldn't get to play much at all and there's a reason.
