Only Ale being MUCH better than Diego or Diego playing very bad does justify Del Piero starting over Diego from a fan point of view who cares about the team in the long run (I'm not one though). I agree with Del Neri's decision to play Diego and to have him in his plans and yes, age is/must be indeed the basic reason for it. Diego is probably going to have a long career here so he has to get adapted to the system and the atmosphere as soon as possible and for this, he needs to play.
I'm completely satisfied with the role Ale has in the team at the moment even though as someone who is more of a Del Piero fan rather than the club's I prefer to see him play more and more. I won't compare this to Alex-Zlatan case some years ago because Capello ruined the team with constantly preferring an extremely out of form player to someone who was being effective anytime he got the playing time and he was only 31 back then.

Why should I like/dislike it? I don't know about this season because I only watched the game against Strum (where Diego was average) but in the last season, we looked clueless with or without Diego. I was never impressed with him at all. He had 3 or 4 good games and that was about it. Other than that, he was average at his best days. I sure hope he plays better this season but I think it's just right to be skeptical about that.
He scored some and had assists. For his first year in Italy and a season in clueless Juventus it was more than decent.
I'm talking about it now. I've seen all games so far and it's a sure thing we look like crap without him. With our new signings it's probably better now.

Just because we didn't have a decent team last year doesn't mean your theory is spot on. It's not Del Piero's fault we conceded so many goals last year. It's not his fault Ciro couldn't get his work done.
And personally I don't think we lose as much as we gain with him on the pitch. Not at all, you're underrating the times he saved our team. Starting from Ranieri's 1st year up until now. We surely gain more with him on the field.

I think it's clear the guy has lost...erm... an 1/8th of a step or so over the years...
But I am absolutely loving watching him run at tired defenses. He's puts them under significant pressure, and they're prone to making mental mistakes... that's the legend factor. ADP's got mind control on tired defenses... hugely intimidating.
Loving the super sub role. In those last 25-30 minutes, it's like Ale all of a sudden just rolls back the clock a few years...

I'm not judging by that theory alone. Ciro even thought of benching him while Del Piero didn't allow that. He was placing an extra pressure on him to play him and hey, benching Alex isn't easy
