I'd finally get to watch a Juventus game without hoping DP does well though. Today I want Juventus to win in the first place, but something doesn't feel quite right if Del Piero had a bad game. The way I see it, when he retires I have to worry less.

That is true, but apart from worrying less, you'll find something missing on the field. I doubt Juventus fans will easily get over it.

I know some will take or consider me as a biased Ale fan or fanboy or obsessed or whatever I don't really care... Juventus and Football to me isn't the same without him.

Just like too many people started loving/loved the game because of Van Basten, Maradona, Zidane, Romario.... Del Piero is the reason I got more attached to the game and Juventus.

That said, I'll always consider myself lucky that I have witnessed this player for so long.

He's gonna leave a void when he leaves. The club won't have that focal point all of a sudden. And that means someone else could finally succeed him. We've been thinking it could happen while he's still playing, but so far nothing has come close. The last few seasons have been really strong.

But once he does leave there will be someone. Sometime. In all likelihood noone we know about yet. I lost track of the new Del Pieros. Rigoni was the first. Chiumento was the name some people entertained at one point. Palladino wasn't it. Neither was any of the acquisitions. Not Miccoli and not Mutu, who would be the closest thing except he'd have to be much younger. And chances are it's not going to be Giovinco or Paolucci either.

And it's not going to be Buffon. Gigi can pass the baton, but he'll be well into his 30s by then. Even Chiellini will be too old. Whoever comes along he has to be young enough to spend most of his career at Juve, and he'll have to start after DP otherwise we'll be left with the impression that he's a second choice.

It doesn't even have to be someone who's brilliant from the beginning. Real Madrid fans thought Portillo would come to succeed Raul because he outscored him in the junior teams. Strangely enough that seems to have been Portillo's career peak. Many junior stars are barely heard from later on (Chiumento would be one example).

Some of the players who were mentioned as Ale's heirs were indeed talented but I think they couldn't bypass the pressure they got from the fans and media comparing them to Del Piero. I still think Giovinco's got the potential to fill Ale's void after his retirement.
