It's a clear 3:2 win then.
Jack, Martin and me don't respect Maldini while Rab and Hoori respect him. I must conclude that the majority of Juve fans don't respect Maldini.

I respected the guy, still think he is one of the best defenders I've seen, but refusing to retire until he dies of old age on the pitch isn't something I could really respect. Its not like he still wouldn't be a legend if he retired a few years ago...

I respect him, I just don't think he's some kind of messiah. That makes 2.5:2:5
In what way do you respect him?
I guess it's the same way as you can respect any football player. His acomplishments on the pitch, his behavior on the pitch?

Why would one respect Maldini more than, lets say, Costacurta ?

That's what i mind about Maldini. Why is it only him that people mention? Why not Costacurta?

You're right. Costacuarta is just as good, heck Kaladze is too.

Anyway, you really can't dislike this man. Such a classy and respected player all over. He's given a lot to football and players like him and Del Piero just can't be disrespected.

I don't dislike Maldini at all. I just think he's overrated.
By overrated i don't mean bad player, of course. He was a very good defender and back in 1993-1994 he was great, but he was never as good as people make him out to be.
Folks consider him the best defender ever, or the best in our time at least, but he wasn't. He lasted long and he won a lot. I guess that's why people put him on the top.
Baresi was twice the defender and player Maldini ever was but for some reason it's always Maldini who's considered to be the best of our time.

Also, i've never seen Maldini defend as well as Nesta did in Lazio or his first years with Milan. Never. I've never seen him defend as Cannavaro in Juve, Terry in Chelsea.
More often than not, Maldini was the weak link in Milan's backline (talking about the last 7-8 years), but people close an eye on Maldini's mistakes.

Maldini the weak link in Milan's defense? What about Roque Junior, Simic, Coco, Luigi Sala, et cetera? Helveg was okay I suppose.

I don't know about others but from what I've seen since I started loving this game. Paolo is indeed one of the best defenders ever. To play for more than 20years in a Milan jersey in such a high level thats not everyone is capable to achieve or do.

Baresi could be better, I haven't followed him the way I've followed Maldini since 1994. And personally I started admiring this player watching him with the Azzurri kit and Captaining Italy for a long period also plays role.

Maldini has been a weak link for the last 2 or 3 years not more. I've seen a better Maldini than the Terry in Chelsea or Nesta in Lazio.

Milan's defense was pretty known and famous, Maldini played a big and huge role there.

Like I said. I can't argue the Baresi Maldini one as I haven't followed Baresi's career like I've followed Maldini's.

Anyway, retiring Baresi's number at Milan says lot of things. Maldini's number will be retired too.

All these guys played a minor role and they didn't play much for Milan.
Maldini was indeed the weak link when the other three in defense were Stam, Nesta and Cafu and he was very bad in the last years (which is normal, though).

Maldini was never the commander of the defense. He was a left back whose contribution in attack was close to zero.
Very good defender, indeed, but never as good as people make him out to be.

One 19 yo boy from the neighbourhood was telling me last week how Maldini is the best defender ever.
This is what i'm talking about. How the fuck does he know this? He was 5 when Maldini had his best season and Maldini certainly wasn't great in the last 5-10 years (when this guy started watching football). But the myth says that Maldini was the best and the guy decided to accept what the myth says.

Now, this guy deserves to be respected by everyone.
All the sacrifices he made, all the times he made everyone eat their words, "surviving" a horror injury and still reaching the top, the loyality, the charisma.....

I know you like them both Rab, and i know i'm a little biased, but Maldini has nothing on Del Piero.
