Del Piero's Ballon d'Or dream
Tuesday 11 November, 2008

Alessandro Del Piero admits he'd love to win the Ballon d'Or before retirement, “but I won't lose sleep over it.”

The 34-year-old is in the form of his life at the moment and earned a standing ovation at the Bernabeu after his brace over Real Madrid.

“It was a very special evening in Madrid, one to put in the top spots of my career for the atmosphere and the two goals, which were real gems,” said the Juventus captain.

Between club and international football, Alex has won the World Cup, five Scudetti (plus two revoked under Calciopoli), a Serie B title, a Coppa Italia, four Italian Super Cups, the Champions League, European Super Cup, Intercontinental Cup and Intertoto Cup.

One of the only trophies he has not been able to place on his mantelpiece is the Ballon d'Or.

“It would make me very happy to win it, but I certainly won't lose sleep over it. For the moment I am focused on what I'm doing right now and that is all.”

Del Piero was left out of Marcello Lippi's last Italy squad, but that does not damage his chances for the 2010 World Cup.

“Right now Lippi is testing out other players and that is not a problem because I know he respects me as much as I respect him.

“I would like to end my career with the 2010 World Cup.”

Im pretty sure that ending his career in 2010 was in context to his international career. Hasn't he stated on numerous occasions that he wants to play until hes 40? and that he has 7 or 8 years left in him?

Someone Reassure me!!!!! I cant imagine calcio without Ale!!!!

Uncomparable if we're talking about Juve and Juve's history

I know a guy who attended Maldini's last match....... 5 times already.
But what is more than club's level? If we are talking on International level then maybe Baggio is ahead of him but not by miles. Del Piero winning a WC put him really close to Baggio on International level. As for goals, there isn't much diff as-well.

to be fair, i'd honestly say that baggio is quite ahead of ale in terms in international, in 1994 he really was the man that took italy to the final albeit missing a penalty in the final, ale has never really set a world cup alight, but you have to respect him for 2006, he scored a brilliant goal coming of the bench, and took a penalty in the final, no one can take that away for him
