Actually Azzurri managers usually announce their final squad lists during the final weeks of May.

So yeah, it's normal that it's announced this "late".

Earlier this season I said I didn't care if DP is called up or not. But now, I think he has to be there. He has a commanding presence, and I think THIS time he can at least 2-3 goals by the end of the group stage along with a few assists as well.

1996 he was inexperienced, 1st tournament. In fact, the entire team f*cked up. Also, Andy Kopke was STUN-NING in goal during that final game vs. Germany.

1998 he somehow had this long term "hangover" from the Sanchis-Hierro treatment he got in May after the CL final...I think that defeat affected him alot, psychologically despite his stunning form that year with Pippo gol :( The squadra were an OK capable of winning it, but still a conservative/defensive approach. Also why wasn’t Zola there…:-/

2000 he'd come back from his Udine injury and was just beginning to pick up form. One of the most solid Italian NT’s I’d ever seen. Very unlucky to miss those two sitters vs. Barthez, when we all saw his stunning goal in the pointless game vs. Sweden (qualification was sealed). Vieri was Italy best striker that season, but suffered injury prior to the tournament.

2002 Trapattoni. Need I say more? I love the guy, and have a tremendous amount of respect for him…but his negative tactics in that WC were just too much. Italy as a whole, sucked in that tournament.

2004 Ok this time, despite Del Piero’s good form at 100% fitness, Italy were unlucky – in any other tournament 2 draws and a win would qualify you (please let’s avoid the Denmark-Sweden conspiracy talk) Greece qualified from their group with less points and ended up winning the damn thing.

2006 Well that was a good year :D But let’s be honest, Del Piero was quite slow. Needless to say the goal vs. Germany made me go absolutely mental. :touched:

2008 Top scorer in Italy, and putting on STUNNINGLY classy displays on the pitch…still this begs the question, can Del Piero take this form in an Azzurri shirt?

Bias or not – he must be me included.

But who are the candidates this year?

Donadoni’s favorites:
Antonio Di Natale (whether you want to count him out wide as a winger or a forward)
Marco Boriello
Tomasso Rocchi
Fabio Quagliarella

Others in contention:
Filippo Inzaghi
Giampaolo Pazzini
Vincenzo Iaquinta

scratch Vinnie, I think he won't be fit for the Euros
Pazzini and Rocchi have been disappointing this season so i'd scratch them as well.
Id like to see these forwards called up:
Toni, Di Natale, DEL PIERO, Inzaghi, Quagliarella
i wouldnt be too disappointed if Cassano got the call either, he is class! but his attitude stinks

That's not as flattering as you think. The fact that he has doubters proves that he inspires doubt in people. If he didn't noone would doubt him and he wouldn't have to prove them wrong.

leave boriello home! he's the one sure candidate there to be a one season wonder who fades into nothingness....and besides i'm sure di natale can play up the cetre if toni get injured (isn't that where he plays for udinese?)

ROME, May 20 (Reuters) - Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero and Sampdoria forward Antonio Cassano have been included in Italy's provisional 24-man squad for Euro 2008, coach Roberto Donadoni said on Tuesday.

Del Piero, 33, has not played for the world champions in eight months but was expected to be included after finishing as Serie A's top scorer for the first time with 21 goals this term.

"Del Piero has done well, he has had a great season," Donadoni, who has agreed a new two-year contract through to the 2010 World Cup, told a news conference.

"He had a first phase with some difficulties then there was a continual improvement and he did what he did and that has permitted him to wear the national team shirt again."

Cassano, on loan from Real Madrid, has produced some inspired displays this season but Donadoni had resisted calling him up because of worries over his bouts of indiscipline.

The colourful 25-year-old, who picked up the last of his 10 caps in 2006, was banned for five games in March for verbally abusing a referee and throwing his shirt towards him.

Cassano told Samp's Web site (www.sampdoria.it): "It was one of my objectives. I am happy to have reached it after an exciting season. This call-up gives me great satisfaction."

Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo was the only other surprise inclusion, with Donadoni having to trim one name before submitting his final squad to UEFA on May 28.

Italy's squad will meet on Sunday after Saturday's Cup final between Serie A champions Inter Milan and runners-up AS Roma. Italy's only friendly before Euro 2008 is against Belgium in Florence on May 30.

There was as expected no place in the squad for 34-year-old AC Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi, who was dropped with Del Piero after a lacklustre showing in September's 0-0 qualifying draw with France.

"Evidently an injury during my club season was enough not to even deserve a phone call, to cancel what I thought was an adult and mature relationship. I'm disappointed I was wrong," Inzaghi told Milan's Web site (www.acmilan.com).

Del Piero, capped 85 times, has been employed by Donadoni on the left hand side of Italy's favoured three-pronged attack, a position the Juve stalwart has openly said he dislikes.

His wish to play as a main striker means he is unlikely to be first choice in the tournament being co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland in June
.

Italy face the Netherlands, Romania and France in Group C.

Roma forward Francesco Totti and AC Milan defenders Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Nesta have retired from internationals. Totti is in any case out until next season with a knee injury.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus), Marco Amelia (Livorno), Morgan De Sanctis (Sevilla)

Defenders: Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid), Marco Materazzi (Inter Milan), Christian Panucci (AS Roma), Andrea Barzagli (Palermo), Gianluca Zambrotta (Barcelona), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Fabio Grosso (Lyon)

Midfielders: Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan), Gennaro Gattuso (AC Milan), Massimo Ambrosini (AC Milan), Daniele De Rossi (AS Roma), Simone Perrotta (AS Roma), Alberto Aquilani (AS Roma), Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus), Riccardo Montolivo (Fiorentina)

Forwards: Luca Toni (Bayern Munich), Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus), Antonio Di Natale (Udinese), Marco Borriello (Genoa), Fabio Quagliarella (Udinese), Antonio Cassano (Sampdoria, on loan from Real Madrid)
