Del Piero's Agent Shocked By Secco Remarks

Stefano Del Piero, Alessandro's agent and brother, has declared himself surprised at recent remarks from Juventus sporting director Alessio Secco claiming that "Alex" could leave the club...

Stefano Del Piero has hit out at Juventus sporting director Alessio Secco for his "surprising" comments regarding Alessandro Del Piero.

"Alex," the veteran striker and club captain, has been locked in increasingly bitter contracual negotiations with the Old Lady hierarchy for months. Secco recently insisted that, should these continue to prove fruitless, the forward could leave the club.

This has left Stefano shocked.

Alex's brother and agent remarked, "That interview with Secco was very surprising.

"It's a real shame. A comment like that could cause tension on both sides."

Del Piero is said to be angry about the prospect of a massive pay cut to extend his current deal, which runs out in 2008. While he's willing to take a reduction, he is thought to be unhappy with the percentage on offer.

Pavel Nedved, the experienced midfielder, apparently was offered a healthier deal than the captain, further raising Alex's ire.

Should he leave on a free transfer next summer, it would signal an acrimonious end to a 15 year connection with the bianconeri.

Del Piero tension grows

Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero’s position at the club is looking increasingly unstable and contract talks appear to have hit a brick wall.

The 32-year-old’s agent and brother Stefano has spent the last two days in meetings with sporting director Alessio Secco and the pair had been expected to reach an agreement on an extension to Pinturricchio’s current deal.

General director Jean-Claude Blanc has always insisted a deal would be done, but yesterday Secco admitted to the Press that there was a risk Juve “may lose Del Piero” and this statement seems to have upset the Del Piero camp.

“The interview with Secco surprised me and is something of a paradox,” Stefano explained. “It’s a shame because that comment could cause tension on both sides.”

As it stands, Del Piero is earning £3.3m per year and is under contract until June 2008. He is willing to accept a pay cut to secure a three-year deal, but not to the extent that has been tabled so far.

The Juventino idol was said to be aggrieved that the original offer made to him a month ago was less generous than Pavel Nedved’s settlement, despite the Czech star’s more advanced age.

Stefano will continue to meet with Secco in Turin this week in the hope of preventing one of calcio’s most high-profile divorce.

Otherwise it is rumoured that Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk are waiting to pounce and would pair Del Piero with ex-Livorno hero Cristiano Lucarelli.

I don't think it's about the money for Alex. It has to do with the respect the Juve board SHOULD have for him after all he has done for Juve over the past 15 yrs. To make matters more insulting, they offered Neddy a more lucrative annual wage than they are offering him. How about that for a slap in the face.
