Alex, Juve 500 times over

A great party for an immense champion. Before this afternoon’s clash with Bari at the Olimpico, Alessandro Del Piero will be honoured for the latest milestone in his career, 500 appearances in the black and white of Juventus. The club and FIAT will together present the captain with a personalised number plate and a scale model of the new Cinquecento. The presentation is just a prelude to what the captain will receive when it is officially released in mid-September: the keys to the tenth model of the new edition Cinquecento to come off the FIAT production line.

September also marks the fourteenth anniversary of a certain Foggia-Juventus (12th September 1993), a game with a special place in the history books. Not for the score-line, a straight forward 1-1 draw on the 4th day of the championship, but for the debut of a rather promising youngster, a 74th minute substitute for the afternoon’s goal scorer Fabrizio Ravanelli. It was Alessandro Del Piero’s first minute in a Juventus shirt, and the game signalled the beginning of a truly remarkable career.
Since then Alex has become the greatest of all time, smashing every possible record. He’s already the club’s record goal scorer and he now becomes only the third player in history to make 500 appearances for Juventus, edging ever closer to the records of the legendary Gaetano Scirea (552) and Beppe Furino (528).

Below are the milestones of Alex’s remarkable journey:

1st
12/09/93 Campionato Foggia-Juventus 1-1
Ravanelli

100th
03/04/96 Champions League Juventus-Nantes 2-0
Vialli, Jugovic

200th
25/10/98 Campionato Juventus-Inter 1-0
Del Piero

300th
29/11/01 Champions League Juventus-Bayern Leverkusen 4-0
2 Trezeguet, Del Piero, Tudor

400th
15/09/04 Champions League Juventus-Ajax 1-0

Furino: “A deserved milestone”

“Del Piero is a boy who has integrated himself perfectly with the Juventus mentality, a mentality built on style and decorum. He really does deserve to reach this milestone”. These were the words of Beppe Furino, Bianconeri legend of the 70s and 80s and second in the Juventus all time appearance table on 528. “He won’t catch me this year, but with all my heart, I hope he manages to overtake me next season”.

Riccardo Scirea: “Alex is a special guy”

“Catching up with my father will be tough, but I think Alex can do it”. Gaetano Scirea is still a long way off on 552 appearances but his son Riccardo hopes and believes that Del Piero will one day reach that milestone as well: “I wish his all the best, he’s a special guy. Now though it’s about celebrating number 500 with a great party at the Olimpico”.

Del Piero: 500 times Juve!
Saturday 20 January, 2007
Alessandro Del Piero is celebrating his 500th appearance in a Juventus jersey and received praise from Didier Deschamps.

“It’s not a record, but it is a truly very important achievement,” said the captain after scoring in the 4-2 win over Bari this afternoon.

“Now in the glorious history of Juventus there are only two players ahead of me – and what players! – Furino and Gaetano Scirea. I am very proud of this step in my career, especially as I marked it with a goal. I’ve won a great deal, including seven Scudetto titles.”

The record books will state he won five due to the Calciopoli scandal that stripped Juve of the 2004-05 and 2005-06 Championships. Even after their demotion, Del Piero was the first to confirm he’d stay with the Bianconeri.

“I pledged myself to this Serie B adventure, even if it wasn’t always easy. I remember my first appearance for the club. It was September 1993 against Foggia and I only played for a few minutes.”

The captain has been on fine form so far this season and Deschamps believes he is an icon for the rest of the team.

“Aside from the goal, Alex set the example, moving well and doing great things,” commented the Coach.

“First of all, he deserves the applause of these fans for the loyalty he has always shown to this club. He fights for every ball on the field and I am pleased to see him enjoying his football so much. It was a great way to celebrate his 500th appearance.

“Del Piero is always decisive. With him, David Trezeguet, Pavel Nedved and Mauro Camoranesi playing together, it’s a whole other Juventus. The younger members of the side can mature and grow alongside these champions.”

The Bianconeri are now clear at the top of the Serie B table following the 4-2 victory over Bari and Napoli’s stumble at Lecce, but they had gone behind in Turin after just one minute.

“The fact we were still in an emergency situation in defence with all our injuries meant that early goal made us feel insecure, but we reacted well with some good football and scoring opportunities. Of course, it’s better for us that the other top teams failed to win.”

There was another returning hero in the squad today, as Pavel Nedved’s five-match ban expired and he marked his comeback with a brace.

“It’s always the champions who make the difference,” continued Deschamps. “Pavel’s return was very important for us. We have players who, when they are in good shape, give the side that step up in quality.”
