Del Piero to be Bicentennial Man

Alessandro Del Piero hopes to score his 200th goal for Juventus and take them out of their Calciopoli penalty against Triestina.

“There is a lot of expectation around this 200th goal for the Bianconeri, but I’m experiencing it in a calm manner,” assured the living club legend.

“It is a very prestigious achievement, even if it’s only a signpost along the way. After all, having scored so many in my career, I certainly won’t get worried about one more!”

Del Piero has so far netted 199 goals in all competition for Juventus and the party is already prepared at Triestina’s Stadio Nereo Rocco this afternoon, but not everyone is focusing on the captain.

“Alex cannot help but be affected by all the attention around him right now, but I am convinced he’ll be able to stay concentrated and think of the good of the team,” said Didier Deschamps.

“The more we win, the more we risk defeat at the next hurdle. It’s a statistical fact,” insisted the Coach after the Turin giants notched up five consecutive victories.

“It all depends on us, of course. We have to keep this in mind and remain concentrated so that we don’t become complacent. We’ll give it all we’ve got, because we want to earn promotion into Serie A without going through the play-offs.”

It would be quite an achievement for Juventus, who started the Serie B campaign from –17 points after the Calciopoli scandal.

A result at Triestina today would push them over the minus mark and into actual figures, as in six games they have already wiped out 16 of those penalty points.

Didier calms tense Del Piero Sunday 22 October, 2006

Alessandro Del Piero is unhappy at his substitution and inability to hit the 200-goal mark, but Didier Deschamps tried to reassure the Juventus hero.

Having suffered in silence for the past two years under Fabio Capello, which saw him regularly replaced or even left on the bench, Alex hoped he would no longer face the same indignities in Serie B.

However, on Saturday he was substituted again during the 1-0 win away to Triestina and was visibly upset, going straight down the players’ tunnel rather than sit on the sidelines with his teammates.

“He just didn’t want to catch a chill,” joked Deschamps. “He’s going through a difficult time right now. We cannot doubt his quality, but it’s not easy to ignore the outside pressure.”

The media has been eagerly-awaiting his 200th goal in a Juventus jersey, but since hitting 199 he hasn’t been able to break through and some believe it is a psychological issue.

“The less he thinks about that goal, the sooner it will arrive,” assured the Coach. “Ale will free himself of this situation. As for the substitution, I try to make the best decisions for the good of the team.”

Cristiano Zanetti was on target for the second week running, having also scored the winner at Treviso on Monday evening.

“I’ve never scored two goals in five days before! I think it must be a unique occurrence in my career,” said the former Inter midfielder.

“We didn’t plan it, the ball simply came to me and I gave it a shot. We didn’t play brilliant football, but right now the important thing is to get three points.”
