Totti: No more excuses Monday 19 June, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Francesco Totti insists the Azzurri have no more alibis if they fail to beat the Czechs, while Alex Del Piero, Pippo Inzaghi and Rino Gattuso push for starting spots.“We must win against the Czech Republic,” Totti wrote on his website. “There are no more excuses. I don’t care about any other issue or debate, as we are capable of beating anyone. Every game is unique and separate from the rest.”

However, the Roma captain also pointed out that the 1-1 draw with the Unites States was not a disaster. “A few days ago we were considered one of the form teams of the World Cup so far, so I don’t see why – now that we’re still top of Group E and with the best goal difference – we’re suddenly heading for an early exit. We have to wait and see what happens before judging this side.”

A draw against the Czech Republic would be enough to see Italy through, but a second place finish would set up an immediate meeting with Brazil. Marcello Lippi is forced to reshuffle his midfield in this clash, as Daniele De Rossi is suspended with Simone Perrotta struggling after picking up a heavy bruise to his thigh in the US draw.

Gennaro Gattuso has fully recovered from a muscular problem and should start, while Mauro Camoranesi could come in for De Rossi on the right. With Luca Toni still looking for his first goal and Totti clearly not at his best, two veterans of the Nazionale are pushing to take over.

Alessandro Del Piero scored all five goals for his team in today’s game between ranks. Pippo Inzaghi netted six – four in one 20-minute match and two in another – while Camoranesi, Totti, Cristian Zaccardo and Marco Materazzi were also on target. Del Piero has been allowed only a couple of substitute appearances in this tournament, while the Milan striker is yet to set foot on the German field.

Zaccardo is also expected to be dropped following his comical own goal against the US. If Fabio Grosso is picked ahead of Massimo Oddo, then Gianluca Zambrotta will switch to right-back.

i hate to see perrotta and de rossi not able to play but this is a good thing for italy because it will give the people that should of started to begin with the chance to come in. this game against the czech's we will have the best possible line-up. Cammo and gattuso have to play and pirlo is in the middle, zaccardo is out seeing how he scored an own goal, and del piero is really rounding into form with his 5 goals today. Ever since that incident with del piero in training he hs seemed to step it up and i think toni will start with inzaghi coming in late to score he usual goals...

Best penalty ever:

1976 Euro final: Czechoslowakia v. W. Germany.

U. Hoeness just missed it. It's 4-3, if the Czechoslowak score, they're champion. A player stepped up to take the fifth and final Czechoslovakian penalty.
Despite the immense pressure, he fooled German goalkeeper Sepp Maier into diving for a save, before coolly chipping the ball straight down the middle and into the net.

Antonin Panenka

Anyone has it in video? Would like to see that piece of artistic coolness again.

i dont think that alex would get the nod against the cezchs in the final game, lippi has soo much faith in totti and he wants two outright strikers upfront. So i guess its another game from the bench for the captain

Deschamps keen on Juve return

Didier Deschamps is in pole position to land the Juventus job and he’s already talking like the new man at the helm.

The Frenchman held negotiations with the club last week as rumours persist that Fabio Capello is on his way out of Turin.

Although the former Juve midfielder insists he is unaware of whether he will be offered the position, he’s ready to become the first Bianconeri tactician of the post Triade era.

“It was pleasing to meet with sporting director Alessio Secco,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

“The project which was described to me was interesting and I’m ready to lead the team in whatever Division they will be in.

“I think I have remained in the hearts of the Juventus faithful for my hard work.

“But it is now up to Juventus to make a call. At the moment, I don’t know whether I am first or second choice as Capello is still there.”

Juventus could find themselves in Serie B next term for sporting fraud, but even the probable mass exodus of players isn’t worrying the 1998 World Cup winner.

“I know that two new important players like Cristiano Zanetti and Marco Marchionni have already been presented,” he added.

“It would also be pleasing to find Alex Del Piero again as we had a great friendship and relationship.”

:touched:

BRING DESCHAMPS NOW!!
