Del Piero-Totti To Start Against Swiss
Marcello Lippi revealed two thirds of the starting attack the Azzurri will feature in the upcoming warm-up friendlies.
“With Del Piero on the left, Totti will be able to run less and find his best condition again,” Lippi told reporters early Tuesday afternoon.
The Italian coach didn’t indicate who he will pick as striker between Toni and Gilardino.
The Fiorentina tower does seem to be the obvious choice given the 31 goals he scored in the last Serie A campaign.
Italy face Switzerland on Wednesday, while on Friday they will test their skills against Ukraine.
Both Totti and Del Piero should be happier in their new roles, as being relegated into a tertiary role behind Gilardino and Toni suits neither's characteristcs. However, that does seem to be Lippi's stock solution, should this new experiment fail to convince him.

Sono tantissimi i momenti che ci legano profondamente e che ho impressi nella mente e nel cuore. Vorrei partire dall’ultimo, da quel boato che mi ha accolto allo stadio di Bari, dove siete accorsi da tutta Italia, l’ennesima dimostrazione dell’affetto che ho ricevuto nei miei 13 anni qui con voi. Tredici anni, ma in realtà molti di più. Ho provato a ripensare a quando ero bambino, alla prima volta che mi hanno regalato una maglietta della Juventus. L’ho indossata e ho provato un’emozione che nel corso degli anni si è trasformata in orgoglio, senso di appartenenza, quegli stessi sentimenti che sono radicati nei tifosi veri, che si sentono parte di una grande famiglia, di una realtà caratterizzata da una tradizione leggendaria. E’ emozionante rileggere la nostra storia, dal 1 novembre 1897, dai ragazzi che seduti su una panchina decisero di fondare una squadra di calcio poi adottata dalla famiglia Agnelli, che non l’ha mai abbandonata e continua, generazione dopo generazione, a prendersene cura con grande passione. La stessa passione che accomuna tutti noi. Ricordo ancora quando arrivai qui, nel 1993, quando incontrai per la prima volta l’Avvocato Agnelli, una presenza constante, come fu poi quella del Dottor Umberto. Ricordo i primi gol, le prime vittorie, il vostro affetto che è aumentato con il passare del tempo: siamo cresciuti assieme, abbiamo gioito tanto, a volte abbiamo sofferto, ma è proprio condividere momenti importanti di vita, belli e meno belli, che fortifica l’affetto che ci lega. Io amo questa maglia, l’ho detto e lo ripeto, e tutto quello che rappresenta, per me, per voi... Abbiamo festeggiato il mio record di gol e non è una statistica che mi rende così felice, ma quello che essa rappresenta: vuol dire essere entrato nella storia della Juventus, aver scritto pagine di vita di questa realtà della quale sognavo fin da bambino di poter far parte. Sono orgoglioso di essere juventino, di essere una “bandiera”, come mi definite spesso, ma in realtà io sono solo una piccola parte di una grande bandiera bianconera, che cresce col passare degli anni e se ognuno di voi guarda con attenzione ci trova scritto anche il proprio nome... Perché questa bandiera continui a crescere c’è bisogno di tutti noi: restiamo uniti!

Hello friends, just in these days, like every year, I have travelled over again with the mind all the season, than badge, mine 7° in bianconera mesh has been concluded with the Victoria of ours 29°. They are tantissimi the moments that they tie to us deeply and that I have impressi in the mind and the heart. I would want to leave from the last one, from that roar that has received to me to the Barium stage, where you are I noticed from all Italy, ennesima the demonstration of the affection that I have received in mine 13 years here with you. Thirteen years, but in truth many more. I have tried to rethink to when I was child, to before the time that has given me one T-shirt of the Juventus. I have worn and I tried an emotion that in the course of the years has been transformed in pride, belongings sense, those same feelings that they are radicati in the true tifosi, than feel part of one great family, of one truth characterized from one leggendaria tradition. Moving E' rileggere our history, from 1 November 1897, the boys who seated on a park bench decided to found a soccer team then adopted from the family Agnelli, than it never has not abandoned and continues, generation after generation, to take itself some cures with great passion. The same passion that joins all we. Memory still when I arrived here, in 1993, when I met for before turns the Lawyer Agnelli, a constante presence, as it was then that one of the Dottor Umberto. It's very emotional reading our story, from November 1st 1897, from a group of friends sitting on a bench wanting to start a football club and adopted by the Agnelli family who never abandonned it and year after year taking care of it with such passion. The same passion that ties us. I remember when I 1st came here in 1993 when I 1st saw l'Avvocato Agnelli, a constant presence just like Dottor Umberto later. I remember my 1st goal, 1st wins, your affection that grew over the years: we've grown together, we cheered a lot, sometimes we suffered, but it's times like these, good or bad, that makes this thing we share stronger. I love this shirt, I said it before and I'll say it again, it's all that it represents, for me and for you...We celebrated my record for most goals and it's not a statistic that makes me happy, it's what it represents: it means entering Juventus's story, it means writing pages of life in this reality that I dreamed of to be able to do when I was a kid. Italy coach Marcello Lippi will give Francesco Totti his first start in more than three months against Switzerland in a pre-FIFA World Cup™ friendly.
The Roma striker has played just once - a brief appearance in the second leg of the Italian Cup final - since fracturing a bone in his ankle on 19 February.
However, following surgery and intensive rehabilitation work, he is ready to form part of a three-man attack with Alessandro Del Piero and either Alberto Gilardino or Luca Toni in Wednesday's friendly in Geneva.
"You will see an unusual three-man attack: a lead striker, Del Piero moved out to the left and Totti in the middle," Lippi was quoted as saying on Gazzetta dello Sport's website on Tuesday.
"He will play the whole of the first of the two friendlies this week (against Switzerland), and part of the match against Ukraine (in Lausanne on Friday).
"The important thing is that he comes through it well, even if there will be a bit of tiredness after a week of intense work. At least with a three-man attack, he'll be a little less busy."
The Azzurri, who are in Group E with the USA, Ghana and Czech Republic, remain among the pre-tournament favourites, although a match-fixing scandal involving a number of top Serie A clubs, including Juventus, has overshadowed their preparations.
Lippi, however, insisted that they would not use the scandal at home as an excuse should they fail to live up to expectations in Germany.
"The team won't be influenced by anything," he said. "If we don't do well, we certainly won't say it was because of what is happening around us."
