HAVING sat out Sydney's embarrassing 7-2 defeat to the Central Coast Mariners last weekend, Alessandro Del Piero was mobbed by crowds at Flemington as a guest of an Italian coffee maker.

But speaking for the first time since the Gosford debacle, Del Piero insisted he would be back as the Sky Blues sought to make amends.

"It's bad anytime you lose but last weekend was harder," he said.

"Also I wasn't playing. I'll be right this week when we play Melbourne Victory."

He also said the result would not define Sydney's season.

"It is a long championship," he said.

"We will improve."

Though Del Piero had tipped Ethiopia, he was taken aback by the sheer scale of the Cup day.

"We were told what to expect but when you get here and see for yourself, it is even more exciting," he said.

'This is our first time in Melbourne, and first time at the races.

"It is a great way to learn about the people and culture."
