I have passionately followed Juventus since around
91/92. It was around that time when I started asking questions to my dear
mother goose…such as…’why is everyone else at school with surnames like
Brown, Smith and Taylor, yet mine is 'XXXnuto????’…it was not until this point
that I learned, at 12 years old, that I was half Sicilian by blood. At this
time, like everyone else at school, I supported Liverpool, to the extent of
heading up to anfield, having my photo taken ON the pitch, and receiving many
slaps to the head (from scouse scum) en route home to Kent after the game. I
began watching italian football, chose Juventus for their zebra stripes and
spirited approach to the game, which absolutely astounded me…That was now 20 years ago.
I dropped Liverpool soon after, and unfortunately
aligned myself to the mighty local league team, Gillingham. A friends father
took me to their games, due to my mother’s pondering that 'the father figure’ may prove useful to curing my behavioural problems. All I remember of those games was the extremely
powerful black trio in attack, who literally crunched all who stood before
them. I seemed to miss the potential 'guidance’ my mother had hoped for, but I
learned a lot about lower league english football. Through this period I was
steadfastly becoming more and more involved with Juventus and italian football.
I did not grow to fiercely adore and respect Del Piero more so than any other
player, . I fell in love with the spirit and seemingly regal nature of
the CLUB. They had class, dived less than everyone else (other than the inzaghi
rat period!), and their spirit was intense, inspiring, magnificent. Nobody more
so, than Conte…I was and remain dubious of his talents as a manager,
but as a player…i can name few players from top class teams, who matched or
now match, his tenacity, sportsmanship and zeal to succeed. Only Hierro,
instantly comes to mind.
I could also mention other players who gave me huge
pleasure from their time at Juve…Montero, the unwaveringly nazi Kohler and
Moller (even though the English half of me is the major part, the dominant, the
most understood and in control…i still smile when i recall Moller scoring that
goal at wembley and assuming the poise- chest puffed out, head held high- of a high
ranking member of the gestapo…a true pigfuker…ballack has always reminded
me of him, but ballack is darker)…Ravanelli!!!! His determination was world
class, and he could score…bravery of a lion…brilliant player./..Roberto
Baggio??…I can easily say that he has brought me more pleasure than Del
Piero…because during his time in our colours, he was the best player in the
world, he did things regularly which few players in history could have matched…Del piero has never managed to reach that position, in my mind and
heart…often world class, absolutely wonderful servant to and ambassador for
the club, but perhaps through circumstance, he has never been, for me, for a
period as long as a year or more, one of my top five rated players in the world
game of now or past times…Regardless, what I had intended to outline was that I have loved the club more than any singular player…damn!, now I am opening up the dusty
chests of memories and feelings stored and guarded deep within whatever I
am…Boksic. The ultra quick, brilliantly but also SOLELY left footed
croatian…his right foot was atrocious. Jugovic? always put in a good shift
and had great technique…Torricelli…a former carpenter jesus lookalike who
made up for his lack of natural talent with a ferocious spirit and ability to
follow instructions…much like di livio…and giaccherini…and sometimes
pepe…Sousa was OK. Zidane was…one of the finest players ever to kick a
ball. 3m?? I think he cost us…from bordeaux…nedved? how could I ever forget
Montero???? he could make an opponent soil his pants by merely glaring at him…a
career resulting in 215 red cards, 58 elbows, 17 headbutts, 9 career ending
fouls…or is that my own fantasy??? he was surely close to such statistics in
reality.
It seemed very clear that Del Piero signed a one
year extension in the summer. meaning that he would likely be leaving ( at
least as a player) next summer. How many top teams regularly have a near to 37
year old striker on the bench, let alone ever starting?
If we are aiming for nostalgia and moreover sentimentality, then I can understand the horror some of you seem to be showing…but I do not want the club to aim for nostalgia, other than in terms of reviving and sustaining the very unique juve grinta.
Do you feel that Conte has disrespected Del Piero by avoiding making him a constant starter this season? When we remain top of the league, far more solid than the last two seasons, and ranging between 'likely to sneak a win or at worst draw’ and 'playing some beautiful football,
winning with ease, actually forcing other teams to be scared of us…with players
like Elia, Quags, Estigarribia still to get a true chance to shine’.
I have mentioned before that the team needs a
different Captain. Del Piero has never been my kind of Captain. I completely
understand why others focus on his ability to lead through Class, SPirit and
Experience. I simply prefer a captain like Viera. A player who leads more
through a regal, close to arrogant mixture of aggression, power and brutal
determination. If Class can be added to that, all the better. It certainly was
in Viera’s case. I like captains who fight..fangs and claws always bared.
Del Piero has been a very special case in world football.
His loyalty outstanding. His talent, even now, too concrete to ever invite
criticism. He has been a glorious ambassador and talisman for the club for so
many years. I, like many, will be sad to see him officially hang up his boots.
Any sense of disrespect seems to me, nothing more than conjecture. The announcement did not shock me, as I already knew what Andrea explained. It seemed very clear
in the off-season just passed, that Del Piero was given a one year extension to
his contract, likely the last. Even during that period, I would not have been
hugely surprised if he had headed to the US, to play out the twilight year or
two of a wonderful career, in a new country and culture with a still larval,
but also clearly exciting and blossoming league.
I have been a passionate Juve supporter for 20 years, but I
would never suggest that one player had impacted every day of my life since i
can remember, that one player literally IS the club…Juve have impacted on many days of my life, especially before
and during and after huge games. But in all much needed honesty, football is
far less important to me than Love, Passion, beautiful wicked cruel women and
my favourite creatures, whether they be feline, canine or homosapien….But if that is really how you follow the club, you always seem
passionate and well meaning, so I guess I am glad to have such a warm madman
sharing a passion of mine, and sharing it regularly on this screen.
Agnelli did not seem to me embarrassed or likely to soon
hide away…he is our President. Also a friend of Del Piero. Since the
calicopoli bullsh_it, NOT ONE of our presidents have actively campaigned for
justice. Andrea Has. He has also, I suspect, made use of his familial
connections in order to bring to the club quite large sums of investment. The
opening ceremony was superb…Conte is Mr Juve and I greatly admire his
character and heart. Our position is presently much better than it has been for
the last two years, and much of this has to do with Andrea Agnelli. I find it
disrespectful to him, to read juventini suggesting such things as…
'First and foremost, this announcement was not Agnelli’s to make’…
'he (agnelli) is probably home hiding in the corner crying in embarrassment,’
'Agnelli is jealous of the power and aura around Alessandro
Del Piero’
That last line is actually a little worrying, for if it has any truth whatsoever…that an aging beloved bandiera has more power in a club the size of Juventus, than the president with a true Right to the throne…then we surely have no chance whatsoever of regaining our former glory and position on the world stage, as one of the very best.
As far as I know, Andrea has done well in his own career,
and has never shown any regret at not making it as a football player. As a more
business minded chap, he will definitely be well aware, and made well aware of by others,
what Del Piero means to the club financially as well as in other ways. I do not think that he sits in his office, barking orders down the phone, consulting nobody but himself, when running the club. I get the impression that he knows what he is doing, or at least wants to do, and is too clever and aware of his blood connection to the very roots of the club, to be attempting to make things Right through failing
to engage and consult vigorously, experts on such matters.
I hugely respect Del Piero, and assume as much as hope that
he will remain with the club, or return to the club, after a brief sojourn in
another country to play out a season or two…as a director or coach or simply
ambassador. I doubt he will be disrespected. And do not feel he has been.
Yes, the timing and circumstances of the announcement seem strange, but to me, they are merely interesting, not sparks towards a fire of suggesting savage divisions within the club….
