and i know ill get a lot of shit for saying this, but i dont think zidane is as good as people call him.he is a great player, but i wouldnt call him a football legend by any means.he was one of the best in the world at his peak, and thats about it.
I think Zidane was the greatest player on a truely awesome French team. He had vision, pinpoint passing and total control of the ball at his feet. He scared teams. Not in that common fashion you see when a fast or technically gifted player runs at a defense. No, when he got the ball, the opposition were afraid of where he'd pass it.
I think he was the best playmaker in the world for a few years, but he wasn't the style of player who carried club teams to sustained success. He could win matches, not leagues.
There are no Platinis now, no Maradonas. I think the game's gotten too athletic, the standards closed up. Think of the CL, or of international football. The big scores of the past are rare now, even the rubbush teams can defend a bit. Maybe I'm wrong. That would be cool - I'd love to see a truely amazing talent take world football by storm.
