So seeing Ruud score at United didnt change Advocaat's mind I'm pleased to say!

Advocaat confirms Van exclusion
Friday, 07 November 2003

Holland boss Dick Advocaat has confirmed that Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will not be in the squad to face Scotland.
Scotland go head to head with Holland next weekend in the first leg of their Euro 2004 play-off, and Advocaat insists van Nistelrooy will not be part of his plans for the clash at Hampden Park.

Advocaat dropped the United hot-shot for last month's qualifier with Moldova after being incensed at his angry reaction when substituted in the defeat to the Czech Republic.

The former Rangers boss was on hand to see van Nistelrooy score twice for United against his old side in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, but is adamant that the striker's performance will not change his mind about including him in the squad.

"In principle I have said van Nistelrooy and Kluivert will not play together against Scotland, and I still feel that way. My visit to Manchester did not change that," Advocaat told the Daily Record.

"As I say, everything is in principle at the moment. I will make my final decisions later when I have seen all of the players in training and I know who is looking sharp. The best players must play."

Advocaat also revealed that Clarence Seedorf could be in line for a recall to the side after recently being frozen out of things.

The Milan midfielder was dropped after a bust-up with the Advocaat in the summer, but both men have made up after their spat during a specially-arranged peace summit in Italy and Seedorf could face Scotland.

"We had to send out a list of 26 candidates and, yes, Seedorf was one of the names on that list," added Advocaat. "It's true I have had a meeting with him in Milan to talk about his situation but we agreed to have that chat some time ago."

    THE TEAMS

Although Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy looks set to start on the bench when Holland face Scotland on Saturday and Wednesday next week for their crucial Euro 2004 play-off, he has at least been recalled by Holland coach Dick Advocaat, who believes it would be wasteful to leave Van Nistelrooy at home. even if he only starts on the bench.

Back in the squad is also AC Milan's Clarence Seedorf who has been called up to replace injured PSV skipper, Mark van Bommel who is out injured.

Ahead of the two leg confrontation Advocaat sounds confident that his troops can secure qualification when saying: "This 20-man squad should secure our qualification. It's all or nothing. I know that and so do the players. We all really want to go to Portugal. It must happen on Saturday and Wednesday."

Surprise omission from the squad is PSV's talented young winger Arjan Robben while surprise additions Clearence Seedorf and Edgar Davids who have been rewarded for their good form in the Italian Seria A.

Bertie Vogts has called up the following players for his team:

i know you must be pissed Erik, but common....

    I say, Sack the Dick.

Yeah I am amazed too. From what I saw, they were pretty disorganized and most players were looking for an individual play, while Scotland were more collective. They have three of the better, if not the best, goalscorers in the world so why not use them!

It was a dissapointing result, and unfair in my mind. There definitely should have been a penalty awarded when Overmars was hauled down, but I am encouraged. RVN played well, despite not scoring, and maybe he'll start alongside VDV who also had a good game. I must say that Andy Van der Meyde was fantastic in that game, and I think that the Dutch will rule the day on the return leg. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 5-0 score-line.

Please give the devil his due as Scotland were vbery good today

Historically Holland have always had problems with Scotland , only heaven knows why

On today's game Kluivert was very poor, RvN only came alive in the second half and with a bit of belief Scotland might have won by 2 goals even

Scotland defended very well but Holland were too static, didnt create much and even if they were rather very unlucky with the penalty situation involving Overmars

I cannot see Holland beating Scotland 5-0 as Scotland rather strangely always seems to raise their game against Germany and Holland

If I was Dutch I would be very worried right now as there is no point in having all the talent in the world if you cannot find a team, just sticking 10 individuals no matter how talented is not the way to do it

I honestly did not understand the Davids /Van Der Vaart substitution and how Cocu played the whole game without doing anything amazed me

im extremely happy with the result :)

i've always had a soft spot for the Scots and they deserved to win today.

I really really hope they get a draw or better in Holland.

    Common you Scots !!!!

Can I just say I am not at all surprised by the result and I seriously do not understand why anyone else IS?

I always said this was going to be a close one! Abd opinion polls in this country showed that most Dutchmen agree with me.

Either way - Holland are NOT and NEVER were a world class team, we only have a pack of world class strikers. There's a difference you know!

Two World Cup finals (West Germany 74 should have been yours) and European Champs is pretty impressive for any team...

just wish we'd managed to get by the first stages of any tournament:frown:

I hardly think 1974 bares any consequence for today. Even France98 doesn't have any effect anymore (that's when this generation was at it's top imo).

Bottomline: current Holland is just a mediocre NT, only the forwards stand out.

Half the squad said they'd retire if they didn't go through (Frank de Boer & co) and the two coaches would quit.

And I should have put it differently: never a world class team anymore since Franc98 ;)

    What a waist of talent.

You know...one of the radio commentators here took 60 minutes before he realised it was Frank and not Ronald playing:cheesy:

Guess he was celebrating early...he was English...no loose situation for him:D

the scots combined team spirit. determination and a large amount of pure hard luck to pull a great upset over Holland..

their keeper was defeated on more then one ocassion but circumstances including a bar and some on the line saves somehow left Holland with not a single goal...

eventhough i somehow dissapointed with the mentality, but i cannot blame em for stop attacking in the 2nd half... they did what they need and succeed to get the result...

Kluivert was having such a terrible game... he was invicible even when Holland was attacking... What a disgrace to Makaay and VDV on the bench..

Van Der Meyde on the other hand was excelent...:thumb:

I am also clear now what was the fuss about that MacFadden guy... nice skill... Everton surely spoilt of choice in attack.. dont understand why they are in the relegation zone right now..
