Oranje didn't succeed in erasing the bad performance against Belarus from the memory. Thanks to Roy Makaay, the Dutch have not been beaten since Advocaat & Van Hanegem took over as coaches but the performance was all but great.
Advocaat wanted to experiment and see how the duo Van Nistelrooy - Van der Vaart would work but he won't have gained much wisdom from this performance. This wasn't solely due to the triangle Van Nistelrooy - Van der Vaart - Kluivert up front, the entire team couldn't create chances and failed to even offer proper resistance to the shining Belgians. The Belgian keeper, De Vlieger, didn't touch the ball until 29 minutes into the match when Van der Vaart took a shot.
The first twenty minutes, it was all one way traffic towards Van der Sar in the Olympic stadium in Brussels. Thomas Buffel, Mbo Mpenza and Wesley Sonck were the most dangerous players and troubled the Dutch defense time and time again.
A huge chance for striker Wesley Sonck came in the 31st minute. Sonck got passed Frank de Boer and let Jaap Stam to bite his dust after that. He then passed keeper Van der Sar and was clear through on goal but De Boer, with one of the fastests sprints I have ever seen, managed to get in between and steal the ball away.
A chance for the Dutch followed when Seedorf got through but stranded on the keeper. The Dutch failed to get decent balls passed the midfield and the defence struggled in this new formation that left virtually no coverage from defending midfielders.
Belgium had no trouble crossing that midfield and when Eric DeFlandre went passed his marker Van Bronckhorst, he slipped a fine pass to striker Wesley Sonck who headed the ball passed Van der Sar. 1-0
The second half saw a new Dutch team come onto the pitch. Roy Makaay replaced Van Nistelrooy, Van Bommel replaced Seedorf, Zenden replaced Van Bronckhorst and Ooijer replaced Reiziger and immediately, the Dutch took control of the match.
Time after time, Oranje went forward and finally success came when Van der Vaart cut through the Belgian defence, passed a ball to Kluivert who, on his turn, passed it perfectly to Roy Makaay. The topscorer of the Spanish Primera División had no trouble beating Belgian keeper De Vlieger to tie the score at 1-1.
The equaliser was justified considering how power had shifted in the second half but more wouldn't have been deserved for the Dutch at that point. The red cards for Cocu and De Cock were a final disappointment in a weird match that was really of no use to any of the two teams and their coaches as preparation for the next matches in the Euro2004 qualification campaign.
