That's the funny thing... I used to feel that these things don't happen to MY country either, but it did.... this is actually the first time my country has ever been hit by a tsunami.... And most everyone was completely caught off-guard.. In Thailand and Malaysia, there was no such thing as "tsunami/ tornado warning", so when it hit, everyone was totally shocked...

When my friend first called me and said that some of the states were hit by an earthquake, i actually laughed... That's ridiculous... Earthquakes JUST DON'T HAPPEN IN MALAYSIA.... Then the news started coming in, and i just stared in disbelief.... Technically, it happened in Indonesia, but it was so strong it affected whole lots of other countries... Countries where it is "supposed" to be too far off to be affected...

but i guess mother nature follows it's own rules....
Geologically speaking, its very rare for tsunamis to be triggered in the indian ocean, anyway, it happened and its really devastating, hope they recover soon

they are just saying that the frequency of tsunamis in the indian ocean wasnt enough for them to spring for a warning system.
cant blame anyone, this is the first time this happens in living history...

Paolo Maldini and Gianluca Zambrotta are among those caught up in the region's turmoil although at present there have been no reports of any casualties among the Serie A contingent.
why are they spending xmas there? they brought the WHOLE family

Here's hoping that our friends in this forum who are from those regions are safe and doing well.

We're praying for you and your families.

Mother nature is a vendictive *****.
I had been through two major disasters in a two year span several years ago. (And as a longtime American Red Cross disaster services volunteer, I can say it's very different when the disaster comes to you first.) For anyone who has been through a major disaster like this, it makes you realize how much our civilization -- when compared to the eternal forces of nature -- is like a dancing bear balanced on a beach ball. The illusion is the day-to-day stability of our societies -- not in the sweeping changes and tragedies that sometimes happen.

My heart goes out to everyone affected. This is really tragic.

Truly a sad event. I've been trying to phone my mates over in that part of the world, but no success as lines are down and/or busy. Hopefully things get sorted out soon...

now even somalia is affected. malaysia has never experienced such things before, no earthquakes, volcanoes etc so I guess our lack of experience played a part in the death of more than 44 people.

im very much thankful to god because im in india and was so, so close to going to kerala (where 150 ppl died) but decided at the very last, extremely last minute that my mother and i should go to ooty in tamilnadu. even tho thousands died in tamilnadu, but ooty is top of the hill, so we weren't affected. and to think we wanted to go to kerala where the reliefs were all brought in in their famous city cochin and all the chaos... :undecide:
