my bad with the run on sentence. My point is it wont work with everyone. The idea with "punishment" refers to excepting something lower than your standard, not a beating or physical punishment...
Its basically another way of explaining be happy with what you got. Take some pride in your mediocrity. If you know you have the potential to reach the stars, then by all means shoot away, but for example if Ascoli fans expected the title they would be some dissapointed fans. If they would even expect relagation, survival would be a bonus and thus give them enjoyment.

it was a fleeting thought. I dont actually really universally believe this should be every aspect of my life- but often it can be used to derive temporary satisfaction out of an unpleasent time/situation. I have aims and ambitions aswell ya know, whether I will fufill them is another matter, but either way ill be happy.

No, I meant actual examples of situation where you "lowered" you expectations to fit the situation and hence it made you happy. All we have so far is theory.

    Example

it snows. I can set out in one of two ways: to play with the snow or to make a snowman.

Lets say im halfway making a snowman, and all the snow has melted away, then if I wanted to build a snowman im dissapointed.

If I wanted to play in the snow im satisfied. Building a snowman was a bonus, thus I cannot be dissapointed should I fail to build it. Should I suceed, then I can be happy I did suceed, more so then if I went into the snow expecting to build a snowman.

Do you get what im trying to bring across?

Is this one from your immediate past or did you have to dig deep into your childhood for it? (In any case I'm curious why you would pick out this particular instance to make your point.)

Yes, I grasp the theory from the theoretical description, it's not that, I was just asking for examples of its application.

It was made up. I dont think that ever happened to me as a child or recently, but I was thinking 5 minutes ago when is it going to snow and it came to me :D

A real life example is women. Often people set their sights waaaay too high with women and cannot get them.

Of course, women is a totally different matter as pulling a hot girl is always great no matter whether you expected it or not, but surely if you expect your going to get an average girl (if a girl at all!) and you end up with a hot girl, then surely the joy is heightend?

Quite, but that's not quite how I read your first post. I somehow got the impression that upon realizing that your goal is not being met, you then lower your standards to avoid disappointment. In this instance, you don't get the hot girl so you say to yourself something to suggest that you are just as happy with the "average" girl. Or was I mistaken?

As in after the action is carried out, you lower your expectations?

I could not do that, in this situation dissapointment would creep in before that happens.

What I meant is that your expectations should be lower- as in what you expect. Which often means lowering your standard.

Ah, but this is something lots of people are not willing to do, we like to dream don't we.
