Never tried it. I am suspect of the results, however. Because a lot of the music I listen to of the past 20 years is pretty obscure, whereas I listen to a lot of "mainstream" music from the 40s, 50s, and even 1800s. ;)

That was exactly my point. If music was mainstream 50 years ago it can't possibly be mainstream at present. I DON'T LISTEN TO MAINSTREAM DAMN IT! :D

I don't have a last.fm account so I can't take the test. :p

But mainstream doesn't mean "music from 2007", it means "what people are listening to in 2007". The guy who's ranked as the most mainstream (105% :D), is listening to:

    Overall Top Artists
    1 The Beatles
    2 Pink Floyd
    3 The Kinks
    4 The Rolling Stones
    5 Eric Clapton
    6 The Doors
    7 Billy Joel

So that's what mainstream means with respect to this "ranking".

That's pretty much my taste in music as well, mainly 60's, 70's rock. However in that era that was most definetly mainstream, rock itself was mainstream, it was the Pop of that era. You had Jazz, Blues...and than you suddenly had Rock which all the girls and boys immediatelly loved. The Beatles were one of the first to start the Pop genre, but it still didn't exist at that time, Rock was pretty much the popular music.

That test sucks, that's why I'm not taking it.
You guys just have a distorted view of what mainstream is :p
My view of mainstream is what's popular at current time, something that's accesible everywhere you look, on every corner. Meaning Rap, Pop, Modern Rock. It's always on TV, Radio, all the discos, I don't know about your town but there's only one coffe shop in Zagreb, that I know off, that plays classic rock. That's mainstream for me, in one word something that's hip ATM, modern.

No, that's commercial music. Mainstream isn't what people hear on mtv and at the mall, it's what they listen to themselves, at least that definition makes a lot more sense. Thousands go to stores, clubs, gyms and have no say in what music plays there. Just because it's on doesn't mean the people who are there would have chosen it.

But it's chosen for them, meaning it's generally believed most people will in fact enjoy it, hence it's mainstream music.

My theory works for me, stop messing with it, I don't listen to mainstream. :D

But it's all part of the sales machine. Tv and radio push whatever is likely to sell the most, in a short period of time. The month after there's a new set of hits. It has nothing to do with people's choice. Stores, clubs, gyms etc may not get a cut, but they imitate it. The whole notion of mainstream doesn't represent a certain musical movement, it's just a principle of constantly trying to sell new music to maximize profit.

You know that you do, and I told you that already couple of weeks ago :D

I can agree to that, but still I don't see 60's rock in that movement, it just doesn't fit.

There isn't a movement, dude, that's what I'm trying to disillusion you of :p

It's just like when the tv weather tells people it's gonna rain so they bring an umbrella to work.

Lots of people listen to your old rock, it's pretty damn mainstream. :D
