Contrast with thousands of dead bodies and billions of dollars of damage to hundreds of decimated towns and cities. There's no comparison. But then look at this thread. 80%+ of the posts are about nuclear fears.

Well what do you expect? The reactor issues are currently underway and the situation is deteriorating. If another Tsunami or massive Earthquake hit, those issues would take the forefront again, as that's the whole concept of "breaking news."

Anything else, I don't know what to say. Don't visit the thread if you don't like my updates.

How do you know what earthquakes are going to cause Tsunamis? Is it all about the location?

It's largely about depth and location of the quakes. Watches are usually issued in that case. Warnings are usually issued if you have a shallow quake and/or have real time data indicating a Tsunami has been created, data which would come from buoys, imaging or eye witness reports.

I thought this was incredible. An event that happens every 1,000 years is rather difficult to prepare for, if you ask me.

Tsunamis on the scale that hit north-east Japan last week may strike the region about once every 1,000 years, a leading seismologist has said.

Dr Roger Musson said there were similarities between the last week's event and another giant wave that hit the Sendai coast in 869AD.

It is not unusual for undersea earthquakes to generate tsunamis in this part of Japan. Offshore quakes in the 19th and 20th centuries also caused large walls of water to hit this area of coastline.

But previous research by a Japanese team shows that in the 869 "Jogan" disaster, tsunami waters moved some 4km inland, causing widespread flooding.

The researchers said that such gigantic tsunamis occur in the area roughly once every 1,000 years. Dr Musson, who is the head of seismic hazard at the British Geological Survey (BGS), suggested the latest tsunami was comparable to the event in 869.

Still, I have to say ... as much as I don't like nuclear meltdowns, it's a paltry excuse for a news story compared to the massive death and destruction wrought by the original earthquake and tsunami. Methinks the media has turned a feeding frenzy out of this because, in part, they've run out of anything new to say about the earthquake and tsunami. It's certainly a big international story, but it's been exacerbated by people hungry for new news where there isn't much of any.

But that's news. They report on "what could have been" more often than they report on "what is". That's called making stuff up. And the thing is, there's a demand for it. And the vacuum needs to be filled. It's the same mechanism that fuels media frenzy on things like OJ Simpson for example.

Though I had to laugh at the fact that I used "evacuate" in a form they made fun of on The Wire...
