The newest quake is located towards the West Coast of Japan, opposite of where the original "great" quake occurred.

So yeah, that isn't an aftershock, that's a whole 'nother quake.

Japanese sky scrapers are built to withstand earthquakes. The twin towers weren't built to withstand airplanes.

Yeah I heard about it. They are very well prepared for the earthquakes, the people too, they know what to do, no one panicked.. It's really some achievement to resist it this way, but I guess there is no way to do something about the tsunami, and specially with this strength.

No, new quake. The epicenter is on the opposite coast of Japan, the west side. That's a brand spankin' new location and quake.

Not necessarily. It depends on the depth of the quake and the magnitude. This one was in the 6 range and apparently not shallow, plus I haven't seen any new Tsunami watches pop up on my screen.

It's an aftershock because it occurred after the main quake. Aftershocks are separate earth quakes. IF an aftershock is larger that the original earthquake, then the aftershock becomes the main event and the prior quake is know as a Foreshock.

In the end, it doesn't matter.

Guys, aftershocks are centered around the same general location under the Earth's crust. If you feel an "aftershock" centered 200 miles away from the original quake, that's not an aftershock. That's a new quake.

The 9.1 quake probably triggered the new quake located on a different fault line.
