Radiation is like bacteria in the public mindset. Everyone associates it as something evil you should always try to eradicate, clueless of what basic function it serves in life.

Which isn't to say a major radiation leak is good. But there's a difference between a mild sunburn and basically being cooked alive.

But the strength of radiation is at the mercy of distance squared, so the impact fades immensely quickly with distance from the source. Then put it in the jet stream, and you're dissipating it over half the globe. At worst, I see no reason to be concerned unless you live in the immediate vicinity (within 30km).

That's true, it wouldn't destroy the entire world, or anything.
