I watched a program on AlJazeera Mubasher on the day before Ramadan started. There were many astronomers who spreaded all over the Islamic world using advanced microscopes to see if the moon can be seen that day. They all had consensus that it was so impossible to see it. After that, Jordan said that somebody saw the moon and the other countries followed as if it is just a political thing, not taking in consideration any astronomical or religious considerations. The same happens when waiting for Eid. Aljazeera Mubasher will have another program today, by the way.
When I was a kid in Saudi Arabia, there was a rumour each Ramadan that if Ramadan will be 30 days in one year, King Fahad would die in that exact year. That is the reason we always saw Eid coming after the 29th day of Ramadan. Hell, we even fasted 28 days once.
