I'm not saying that global warming isn't a massive catastrophe which threats the entire world, however, if you check the hezballa thread (check it here), you may make up your mind again about such an issue; why does he think that way?

By the way, ReBeL is far better than both George Bush and Dick Cheney.

I believe Rebel is essentially the same as those politicians, just on the opposite end of the spectrum for most issues.

For Rebel, the constant nonsense going on in his region is certainly a bigger problem for him than global warming. Well good great grand wonderful. But that doesn't negate the scientific evidence of global warming nor gives him the license to act like it's a farce. To me, from what he has said about global warming being nothing more than propaganda, he is being closed-minded about the situation. But your ideas ARE you. The notions streaming through your head make you what you are, as nothing else regulates the sort of person you happen to be. And your notions regarding world politics are very similar to that of Bush... extremely biased, completely one-sided and only involve your best interest. What's the difference?! It's impossible to attack your ideas without attacking you.

This is the consequence for writing off the said topic without providing any sort of logical evidence whatsoever. Gotta disagree with you on this one, Zé. I don't see climate change/global warming as some environmental mental masturbation exercise for those only with the luxury of college educations and free time.

I see the side-effects to global warming being about the only mankind-induced thing that could make our 1980s concept of nuclear holocaust seem humane by comparison. Forces that we know previously caused the extermination of 80% or more of the world's living species, without the acceleration of mankind's hands as we have today, are not something to take lightly as if some cute and pathetic idea that won't make it out of college campuses.

We can't even begin to conceive of the level of world conflict that would arise under those circumstances...from the mass starvation, the mass exodus of entire regions of the world on a biblical scale. If you can't put the 2 and 2 together of past mass extermination events on earth combined with today's scientific data combined with mankind's history under scarcity of resources, I don't see how anyone can make light of it. The ones who do are more myopic than from just putting their heads in the sand.

If folks call it overhyped, they're just living comfortably numb and in denial. If it hasn't happened in the last 200 years, it just doesn't exist or just isn't possible.

Break out the geological and biological history books on earth for what happened to all the world's species during these past mass extinction events. Look at what climate change has done in the past -- with just a few degrees change of the earth's surface temperature -- regardless of what man is doing today to accelerate it. And then take a look at today's unprecedental polar melting and carbon dioxide levels on earth in the past 200,000 years and then come back and tell me that it's overhyped.

...or just join the party line of the oil companies. As they know best and have nothing to hide.

I do sometimes wonder if it's like acid rain though. They kept telling us in the '80s that one was gonna wipe us all out by 1995, killing all the earth's forests first.

Never happened.

As for climate change: it's not really an issue for our generation, is it? By the time it gets to a point where it's serious enough to cause WWIII, I'll be dead already.

Acid rain, as I recalled was caused by sulfur in the atmosphere created by the burning of coal and petroleum. Maybe, just maybe, the West has been using some filters to avoid sulfur getting in the atmosphere but I doubt China and India have those.

In my book of logic that means acid rain should still have killed us.

Well, the scary stuff is the evidence in polar ice cores that have shown that things like ocean currents can stop and reverse with temperature shifts, amplifying the effect, so there have been examples where ice ages can come on in just a matter of 6-7 years.

Climate change may be more insidious though -- kind of like the problems in Italian soccer. Corrosive, but they take a little time. First it starts out with the Netherlands and Venice under water. Within a few years, more hurricanes, drought, and famines. Then civil wars, riots, starving people, and more political unrest.

Before you know it, you look back 15 years and you realize it was once unthinkable to eat your neighbor as a food source.

really worrying when you consider that britains climate is increased by teh gulf stream. i watched a programme recently that showed that due to all the fresh cold water breaking from the icebergs is entering the sea andslowing down teh gulf stream. when you look at scotlands positioning on the globe we could get hit with a shit long winter. they reckon that instead of benefitting from longer hotter summers, britain might end up plunged into another ice age
