It's really not. You guys are seeing what you want to see. It's easy to talk about great players of the past and pretend they're so much better than what we have now, but all evidence points to the contrary.

He was the defining example of the "marauding fullback". Complete package. Positionning, stamina, 1v1, crossing, technique, winning it back,..
Lichtsteiner struggled versus Robben and Neymar. Zambrotta went against much better players, and never got overplayed.

How would your team look if you had this seasons team and that of 2006?
Yeah. I bet Pogba would never play in the team we had in 2006. No one from our current team would. Not even Buffon. Right? Oh wait.. Please. The Dybala of this season vastly outperforms Zlatan of 2005-06.

Licht rarely gets beaten by his man. He is as solid as they come defensively. He might not have the pace Zamb had but his positioning makes up for it. It's his crossing and final service to the strikers that sets him apart from Zamb IMO. Licht runs himself ragged on the right but all the effort goes unrewarded because of his crossing.

I chose a 4-4-2 because of the convenience as I'm doing this quickly. I also went with Dybala-Mandzukic because they're an excellent pair IMO and of all the strikers in those two seasons they had the longest in form periods. Pogba-Marchisio are head and shoulders above whatever central midfield we had in 2006. Defensively I rate us about as good now as back then, but I went with Canna and Zambrotta because they were seemingly indestructibe in 2005-06 and the following World Cup.
If anything Zambrotta was one of the most underrated FBs of his generation. He would consistently pawn the likes of R. Carlos or Cafu. It's beyond insane to compare him with Licht, with all due respect to the latter. The guy was the most complete FB, eventhough he started his career as wing forward, then gradually moved to the back. Iirc he was injured for half a season in 2002/03 and Camo took his spot. The only way to integrate both was to adapt him to a new position. He was also one of Italy's best players in 2006 WC.
No one probably. And in all fairness both teams have better strikers. Morata, Zlatan, Del Piero and Trezeguet are obviously a lot more talented. But you can't in good faith say that either Del Piero or Zlatan had a very good season in 2005-06 (mostly because of their rivalry). I left out Trezeguet (who did score over 20 goals iirc) because he would be a bad fit with Dybala and Morata because he spent a lot of time on the bench.
