To be honest after Calciopoli when we knew that DP, Nedved, Camo, Trez and Buffon are staying I was very optimistic that Juve would recover. Our first season back from Serie B added to that belief significantly. It was only when Ranieri was sacked and we had the likes of Zacherroni and Ciro completely destroy all Ranieri's work. That made me lose all hope and then even when the new management came in I had no hope whatsoever that we will see Juve back again. We were financially depleted, the great players were all getting very old and injured most of the time and it was completely dark.
When Marotta signed Conte I really thought it would be just another Ciro Ferrara saga. We sold Diego, Amauri had become shit, we gave up Giovinco on loan, Trez and Camo were gone and DP showed very strong signs of old age while Nedved retired. We signed Barzagli and Pirlo whom I believed were either not good enough or finished. Vidal looked like a great signing but to me he was just one player thats good. I hated Matri, Vucinic and Quags and thought they were all midtable teams strikers. The squad looked terrible to me and I felt Conte was too inexperienced of a coach to use this squad to deliver any result.
I thought its a terrible decision to gamble again with an unknown coach and expect him to do a Guardiola because more often then not this is what happens with these kind of coaches. I wanted a Van Gaal or Hiddink kind of coach who has done it all before and had a proven record. It was completely dark, I didnt think Juve will ever win Serie A again let alone do anything in Europe and that I'd lose interest in football until some oil sheikh purchases the club and pumps massive money into it.
Until December 2011 I was very skeptical that the team will keep it up to get a top 3 finish. Since Dec and until we won the league I thought we would end up in second at best and I thought that would be a success and I was skeptical that we would be continuously finishing in top 3. Man was I proven wrong. The squad blew me away. Throughout Conte's era I had no hopes to compete in the CL because of the financial Gap that was between us and Madrid, Barca, Bayern, United, City, Chelsea and PSG. I thought that it will take 3-4 more seasons before we have any serious showing in the CL because thats the time it would take for the club to be profitable enough to be able to act in the market.
Then Conte left and I thought Allegri will destroy all the good work Conte. I thought he'd do what Benitez did to Mourinho's Inter and that the fans and media will pile massive pressure on him and that this will tear the team apart. Allegri ofcoarse proved to be a master at handling the pressure, he kept the status quo for sometime before introducing tweaks that worked to great effect and got the team to gradually improve as the season went along. We were lucky in the CL draw as we didnt face a big team early on but rather had a gradually increasing difficulty that was in parallel to the gradual improvement of our performances. I honestly thought that no coach even Mourinho can get this squad to compete like that Europe and certainly not Allegri until 3-4 years have passed to give us the proper finances.
Our team's main playmaker was also getting injured, our best player was being hunted by United and Madrid, Pogba was getting hunted too and our best CB and our legendary GK were getting very old. I thought that this squad wont get to do anything in europe and that a transition to a new younger squad has to happen and that the new young squad coupled with the additions that we'd be able to make once we are richer are the ones that will get the club back to competing in Europe.
Allegri brilliantly managed the squad and got them to improve a lot and so in my books we have arrived in Europe 3-4 years early. It also helps that most of our European competitors have imploded or under performed. United should be like Madrid, Bayern and Barca but imploded. Chelsea have under-performed in Europe. City havent managed to fix their mental issues despite a massive squad. Dortmund have imploded. Only PSG and ATM did a good job in Europe.
Marotta and Agnelli have achieved massive success against all odds twice. First with the Conte era getting Juve back on top of Serie A 3 years earlier than even optimists expected. And second with the Allegri Era getting Juve back amongst the European giants again 3 years earlier than what anyone can reasonable expect. Massive success. If you want to appreciate how hard it is to achieve this look back at our Ferrara and DN days or even better look at Liverpool, Arsenal, Current United, City, Roma and Inter who can't seem to get their teams to properly function either in Serie A or in Europe or in both despite most of them spending massive money every year and maintaining a massive wage bill . What we achieved is the stuff of dreams.
