What I am struggling with is whether or not the starting XI is really the problem.
Unless there is a change in formation, where could they possibly hope to get a starter to improve themselves? the only place that I can see it, potentially, is LWB.
Granted, Asamoah has been improving year over year at that position, but his true calling is, and should always be as a CM.
So who else needs replacing, when healthy?
Bonucci is the obvious target, but the problem at hand is that they don't really have that type of CB that can function in the middle of a 3 man defense besides him. OF course, it could be said that he really doesn't do it either, but that is another story for another time, although this could be why the search for another defender.
I don't really see anything that would lead me to believe that there is going to be a change in formation.
To me, the acquisition of Evra basically serves as cover for Asamoah when Kwadwo goes to the African Nations Cup this year. This club barely got by when he came back the last time and was exhausted.
Morata is a promising young CF, and buyback aside, shouldn't be a barometer of the talent that he posseses.
Romulo is not a sexy choice at all, but at least you can say that he is certainly better than Isla or Padion, and kills 2 birds with one stone for CM and RWB depth. And no , I'm not enamored with Caceres as a RWB, I think he serves the club a greater purpose in a 4 man back line.
Peryera. If I had any indication what formation they would be playing, then I would have a better idea as to what to make of it
Coman- To me, this is the most exciting prospect of the bunch. He wouldn't leave a team like PSG unless he and Juve knew that he would be first team material, and get to paly. How they utilize his speed is something that the coaches get paid the big money for, not me.
I think that if you look at the transfers individually, it's not bad. Not earth shattering, but not bad either.
The next acquisition is key as to where this club is going in regards to formation.
If they get an AM such as a Pastore or the like, then some of these prior acquisitions make more sense, with the probable need to move to a 4 man defense, with evra and Licht moving to LB and Rb, respectively, and Chiellini and Bonucci, for now being the 2 CB's until Barzagli returns, with Ogbonna being a sub in a more comfortable 4 man backline for him.
Peryera would make sense as well, with being a CM and AM backup when the situation calls for it.
As much as I would have loved Iturbe to come here, it would have ended up requiring the team to spend more money to partner him with a LW to switch to a 4-3-3.
I guess what I'm saying is I can't really give a grade at this point, with a month still left in the transfer season, but I really would like to see an AM come on board, even if they don't totally commit to using a formation that would suit him, if only for the versatility and the options that it would give Allegri if the 3-5-2 isn't working.
I'm not jumping for joy at this campaign so far aside from Coman and Morata (again, just on talent and age alone), nor do I have my pitchfork at the ready to storm the castle.
